Virginia and Outer Banks Surf Forecast Wednesday May 20th Gorgeous Conditions Today Stormy Weather Moving In Thursday
# VIRGINIA AND OUTER BANKS SURF FORECAST
Good morning, this is your Wednesday, May twentieth surf zone forecast for the Virginia and Outer Banks coastline.
Let's start with today, and folks, if you're heading to the beach, it's going to be absolutely gorgeous out there. Sunshine all day long, temperatures climbing into the upper eighties down in Virginia Beach, and the mid-eighties up in the Outer Banks. But here's the thing, that UV index is very high, so slather on that sunscreen.
The water's sitting in the lower sixties, so it'll be refreshing. We're looking at two to four foot waves across most of the region, though Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks Currituck area are running slightly smaller at two to three feet. Winds are light to moderate out of the southwest at around fifteen miles per hour.
Now, about those rip currents. Maryland beaches and the Accomack-Northampton area have a moderate rip current risk in effect through this evening, so if you're swimming in those zones, be smart about it. Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks are looking at low risk today, but remember, life-threatening rip currents can pop up near groins, jetties, and piers anywhere along the coast.
Tides are favorable for most beach activities with highs early to mid-morning and lows in the late afternoon.
Tomorrow things start to change. A system's moving in, and we'll see mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies developing. There's a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially down in Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks. Temperatures are going to take a hit, dropping into the upper sixties to upper seventies depending on where you are. The moderate rip current risk expands to all areas, and we'll still see two to four foot waves. Winds become northeast around ten to twenty miles per hour.
Looking ahead to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we're in a more active weather pattern. Showers and thunderstorms become likely Friday through Saturday, with the best chance of rain on Saturday. Surf heights are expected to build to three to five feet across the region, particularly Friday in the Accomack-Northampton area where northeast winds gust around twenty-five miles per hour. That's breezy. Sunday brings a slight reprieve with just a chance of showers and some clearing, though thunderstorms remain possible.
Here's an important note: when surf heights exceed four feet, we typically see dangerous breaking waves in the surf zone, which can push rip current risk to moderate or high levels.
So if you're planning a beach day, today is your money day. Get out there and enjoy the sunshine while you can. If you're thinking about heading out later in the week, just know you'll need to be more cautious with the incoming system and elevated surf conditions.
Stay safe out there, and we'll have another forecast update for you tomorrow morning.
