The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead was the most anticipated novel in 2016. Whitehead turns the system of houses and smugglers that helped slaves get north to an actual railroad underground: tunnels dug by abolitionists, built railways, trains, and conductors. Each stop is a new American state that provides Cora, the main character, a rang of new possibilities and different forms of operation due to her skin color. The book has a spell in it, once you read the first chapter you'll find it very hard to put it down. . Bird by Birdby Anne Lamott is a book about writing and the life of a writer. This is one of the very first books I read in my early writing journey, and at the time, it gave me the reconciliation I needed when I doubted my craft. The book is funny, honest, and practical; every writer should have a copy to visit in bleak artistic days. . This Blinding Absence of Lightis one of my top 10 favorite books. It is dark, yet full of hope; it is political, yet innately sentimental. The coup d'etat of the 1976 against the late Hassan II of Morocco forced the life of the soldiers into dungeons with no light and small ration of food-- just to barely live. Ben Jelloun's told us the story of those who survived in a language inaccessible to newspapers and documentaries. . If you are looking for hope in the midst of the darkest of places then This Blinding Absence of Lightwill teach you how to attain it. .
