You’ve followed the rules, collected the job titles, relationships, and responsibilities… and somehow ended up in the messy middle thinking, “Hang on, who am I and when did my life start running me?”Welcome to Messy Midlife: It’s Not A Crisis, It’s A Calling to Connect – The Nine Principles of Authentic Living. This podcast is for humans roughly 35–65 who look “sorted” from the outside but feel lost, burnt out, overwhelmed, or one passive-aggressive email away from screaming into a pillow.I’m Jody – midlife coach, former corporate burnout, child of chaos, and someone who has done the full midlife plot twist: breakdown, identity crisis, six-stone weight loss, and putting type 2 diabetes into remission while rebuilding a life that actually fits. I created the Nine Principles of Authentic Living – Awareness, Understanding, Trust, Honesty, Empowerment, Nurture, Transformation, Integrity, and Compassion – and this show is where we apply them to real, messy lives, not perfectly curated Instagram squares. Each episode blends honest solo story-time from the “beautiful disaster” chapters of my own life with raw, funny, no-BS conversations with guests who are navigating midlife reinventions: careers, relationships, addiction, health, identity, and that quiet “Surely there’s more than this?” voice you keep trying to ignore. We’re not here for fluffy “think positive” platitudes; we’re here to name the hard stuff, laugh (sometimes inappropriately), and then actually do something about it.If you’re ready to swap midlife crisis for midlife calling, reconnect with who you really are, and write a next chapter you don’t need to escape from, this is your invitation to connect, not perform. Listen on your walk, in the car, or hiding in the loo from your responsibilities – no judgement, just real talk, practical tools, and a whole lot of compassion for the glorious mess of being human in the middle.

Awareness Isn't The End, It's The Beginning

Connect With Jody [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2610982/fan_mail/new] Practical coaching for midlife reinvention. Twelve episodes ago, Jody stepped onto a bus she had never consciously chosen. Today we close the first principle of Messy Midlife with the whole of that journey gathered up in one place. Episode 12 is the season close. Jody walks back through every episode of Season 1, the toilet cubicle moment in EP1, Hanna Curman's messy middle in EP2, the iceberg in EP3, the fraying ropes and sea mist of EP4, Roger Webb's nomadic wisdom in EP5, the four questions of EP6, the morning launch pad in EP7, Kristof Morrow's words as medicine in EP8, the bookends of EP9, the quiet archaeology of EP10, and Nicole Anderson's choose your hard in EP11, and draws the whole framework together. At its centre is the Three-Layered Awareness Map. Three questions, that is all. What am I doing? What am I feeling? What might I not yet know? If you can hold those three, not as a self-improvement project but as a way of staying honest with yourself, you already understand the heart of what this season has been trying to teach. Jody also opens the door to what comes next. Season 2 begins with Principle 2, Understanding. Where awareness tells us what is happening, understanding begins to ask why. Why do I keep reacting this way? Why does this pattern keep returning? What is this actually pointing toward? The season closes with the image of kintsugi, the Japanese art of filling the cracks in broken pottery with gold, so the break becomes the most beautiful part. That is what awareness has done for us. And it is where understanding will now take us next. New to Messy Midlife? Burnout Is Not The Price of Success — Redefining Career, Leadership & Midlife Transition with Nicole Anderson

Connect With Jody [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2610982/fan_mail/new] A Guide for Midlife Leaders Who Know Something Has to Change What do you do when you've climbed the ladder, ticked all the boxes, and still feel empty — or worse, completely burnt out? In this powerful episode, Jody talks with Nicole Anderson, leadership and career transition expert and Partner at the Kayla Group, about what it really means to transition rather than change jobs. Nicole shares her own messy middle moment — a career-defining crossroads where motherhood, ambition, and identity collided — and the journey that led her to create the Inner Work of Leaders framework. Together, Jody and Nicole explore why so many high-achieving leaders find themselves exhausted, stuck, and secretly wondering: is this it? This conversation goes deep on the difference between resilience and avoidance, why pausing is your most powerful strategic move, and how to carry both grief and excitement as you step into your next chapter. Nicole's coach once told her: "Choose your hard. What you're going through right now is hard. Making a change is also hard. Both are hard — just choose which hard you want." Whether you're a leader at a crossroads, a professional feeling the pull of midlife reinvention, or someone who's tired of pretending everything's fine — this episode is for you. You'll hear: * Why "fake it till you make it" is quietly destroying leaders * The real reason resilience is not the answer * How to transition with integrity — keeping relationships and legacy intact * Nicole's Purpose Factor Assessment and Bold Leader Reset programme * What your 80-year-old self would say to you right now Founder and CEO of Audacia Leadership  Connect with her on LinkedIn: Nicole Morrow Anderson | nicole@thekaylagroup.com Be A Guest On The Show [https://www.podmatch.com/member/messymidlife] If you have a story you want to share on the Messy Mildlife, get in touch through PodMatch Book Jody As A Guest On Your Show [https://www.podmatch.com/member/authenticcoaching] You can book Jody on your show through PodMatch Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Why You Feel Tired Even After Sleep. Returning To Yourself In Midlife

Connect With Jody [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2610982/fan_mail/new] Practical coaching for midlife reinvention.  There is a particular kind of tiredness that has nothing to do with sleep. You know the one. You have had your eight hours. You have ticked every box. And yet something in you is still exhausted. Not your body. Something deeper. In Episode 10 of Messy Midlife, Jody Brooks goes one layer deeper into the awareness principle. If Episode 9 helped you name what you are doing and what you are feeling, this episode invites you into the third and quietest layer, what you have not yet let yourself see. Jody calls it a quiet archaeology. Not the Indiana Jones version. The gentle brushing away of inherited roles, absorbed expectations, and old survival strategies, the ones that once kept you safe and now quietly keep you from yourself. You'll meet the iceberg again, the small conscious tip that we can point to, and the vast, unseen part underneath that is actually doing most of the steering. You'll learn why flipping the question, from "what do I want" to "what do I not want"  often surfaces the truth faster. And you'll hear Jody's own turning point: the moment she realised she had forgotten to update her identity from business owner to employee, and how that one uncovered artefact changed everything. This is awareness reaching into understanding. It is the bridge. And it starts not with a grand leap but with one small, curious question you are willing to sit with. New to Messy Midlife? Start with Episode 1 — The Moment I Knew. It is the gateway to the whole Awareness Principle. 🎧 Follow Messy Midlife on Spotify so this episode and Wednesday's guest conversation with Nicole Anderson, and Friday's season close, land in your library automatically. Why You Feel Empty at the End of the Day And What to Do Tonight: Evening Awareness Practice

Connect With Jody [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2610982/fan_mail/new] Why You Feel Empty at the End of the Day And What to Do Tonight: Evening Awareness Practice You've been in the day. You've lived it, responded to it, felt it, even if you didn't stop to name any of it. Now it's quieter. And this is the moment to look back with Kindness. In this closing episode of Awareness Week, Jody introduces the first two levels of awareness: noticing what you are doing and what you are feeling. Together with the morning practice in Episode 7, this evening check-in completes a daily rhythm that helps you understand yourself more honestly and start to see the patterns that have been running your life without your full knowledge. Because underneath the doing is almost always emotion. The rushing might be anxiety. The over-giving might be fear. The scrolling might be exhausting. And the evening is when you're finally still enough to notice. Two questions. That's all you need tonight. How Words Saved Me: Christoph Morrow on Addiction, Divorce and Finding Purpose

Connect With Jody [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2610982/fan_mail/new] In this Midweek Deep Dive, Jody Brooks sits down with author and former US Navy veteran Kristof Morrow to explore how awareness, trauma and creativity intertwine in messy midlife. Kristof’s journey spans childhood abuse, violent addiction in the family, his own alcoholism, Tourette's, chronic illness, immigration, divorce and a long period of despair. He shares how a single phone call in Canada,  telling him no one would hire him because of his condition, led him to pick up the pen again and begin a rebirth through writing.    Together, Jody and Kristof talk about what a midlife ‘crisis’ really is, the difference between trying to fit in and finding your place in the world, and why he believes our greatest virtue as humans is the desire to understand and be understood. You’ll hear powerful reflections on surrender, sobriety, kindness as a weapon of compassion, and the discipline of writing 1,000 words a day to stay connected to self.   Join the Authentic Life Community: [https://authenticcoaching.me/messy-midlife-podcast] https://authenticcoaching.me/messy-midlife-podcast [https://authenticcoaching.me/messy-midlife-podcast] Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_authenticcoach/ [https://www.instagram.com/the_authenticcoach/] Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61577431237858 [https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61577431237858] Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgMbKkuAqAtXkv0NTI2KcWA [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgMbKkuAqAtXkv0NTI2KcWA] Threads: https://www.threads.com/@the_authenticcoach [https://www.threads.com/@the_authenticcoach] © 2026 Messy Midlife: It’s Not A Crisis, It’s A Calling to Connect.
