Hidden deep within the Pennsylvania Wilds are the eerie remains of the Curtiss-Wright Testing Bunkers—abandoned Cold War-era facilities once used in an attempt to develop nuclear-powered jet engines for the United States Air Force. Constructed in the late 1950s in the remote Quehanna Wild Area, these concrete-and-steel bunkers were designed to test experimental engines that could theoretically keep military aircraft airborne indefinitely. Before the project could fully take off, the contracts were canceled in 1960, leaving the bunkers abandoned in the middle of the woods. Because of the site’s mysterious history and hidden location, locals sometimes refer to it as Pennsylvania’s “Area 51.” Rumors persist that more than nuclear testing happened there, and some even speculate the towering fences weren’t meant to keep people out, but to keep something in.
