Every year, the Buckminster Fuller Institute (https://www.bfi.org) hosts a dynamic event called Trimtab Space Camp, and each event encourages participants to join or host a Mission, the collaborative learning component of this 8-week online event. This year's Space Camp: Towards Climate Stabilization hosted 20 Missions with over 150 participants. At the end of the eight-week journey, crew-members from each Mission have 5 minutes to share their results with the group and the wider BFI community of over 100,000 people. The Spaceship Earth Mission Log project will be interviewing leaders from each of the 20 Missions over the next 8 weeks beyond the close of this Space Camp. Subscribe to make deeper connections and be notified when each Mission Log comes out! Steven Leavitt hosts this series, and is the host of The Language of Creativity podcast, https://www.thelanguageofcreativity.com. He has attended four Space Camps since 2020 and is inspired by Buckminster Fuller's quote: “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” spaceshipearthmissionlog.substack.com

episode Veronica Anderson: Inner and Outer Architecture cover

Veronica Anderson: Inner and Outer Architecture

This is a special Mission Log episode and a continuation of the Design Science Synarchy Mission series (Stephen Bau [https://spaceshipearthmissionlog.substack.com/p/mission-log-9-stephen-bau#details], Mark Smith [https://spaceshipearthmissionlog.substack.com/p/mission-log-10-mark-smith#details]… Veronica Anderson). Veronica Anderson is a member of the Design Science Studio and also a member of the Design Science Synarchy mission. The Synarchy was created to support the founders of the DSS and synarchy is a form of join-governance. I open the show by inviting Veronica to lead a centering meditation, a practice that has been a part of Design Science Studio meetings and was a welcome addition to the latest Space Camp. Veronica studied Zen Buddhism for over 15 years, and was a student of the late Thich Nhat Hanh. As an architect, Veronica notes that only 10% or 15% of architects are women. She wonders how that influences our built environments and if, in turn that might be influence how we collectively think, feel and act? In her work she aims to design structures that work in partnership with nature. “I was studying sustainability in architecture school, and they're teaching us that this was an alternative to development practices. And I thought, that's crazy. Why would we do anything that's not sustainable? How could we perpetuate something that we know to be unsustainable and detrimental?” Her project submitted to the Design Science Studio called Home Dash [https://homedash.mailchimpsites.com/] aims to provide a platform to see Earth’s heartbeat so that people can collaboratively design regenerative global systems, help communities and their makers optimize local actions for maximum positive impact, in climate action and sustainable development. (This reminds me a lot of The Flywheel Project [https://spaceshipearthmissionlog.substack.com/p/mission-log-11-carrie-norton#details].) We also talk about how our measurement of time has been a tool of colonialization fueling trends like hyper-productivity. Veronica shares a little about living in Costa Rica, and about the healing process she works with calls “ensoulment.” (A bonus episode called Ensoulment [https://languageofcreativity.podbean.com/e/bonus-ensoulment-stephenbau-veronicaandersonsanadora/] on my other podcast, The Language of Creativity). Veronica’s life and work are inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s quote: “You don’t belong to yourself, you belong to the universe.” Veronica Anderson: veronica.earth [https://veronica.earth] IG: @vero.earth [https://www.instagram.com/vero.earth/] IG: @visionaryarch [https://www.instagram.com/visionaryarch/] Studio Sanadora [https://www.studiosanadora.com/] Home-Dash [https://homedash.mailchimpsites.com/] GaiaTica (via YouTube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeDQhqHYnKA]) Other Design Science Synarchy episodes: Stephen Bau: Design Science Synarchy (YouTube) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKpvC-LkIxM&ab_channel=SpaceshipEarthMissionLog], Mark Smith: Electrons + Protons + Consciousness (YouTube) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqxZ4CdKkGk&ab_channel=SpaceshipEarthMissionLog] The Design Science Studio https://www.designscience.studio [https://www.designscience.studio] The Buckminster Fuller Institute https://www.bfi.org [https://www.bfi.org] Trimtab Spacecamp Community trimtab.substack.com [https://trimtab.substack.com/] Scott Thrift’s Clocks https://thepresent.is [https://thepresent.is/] Stephen Bau’s Circular Calendar theapocrypha.substack.com [https://theapocrypha.substack.com/p/a-sense-of-time] Get full access to Spaceship Earth Mission Log at spaceshipearthmissionlog.substack.com/subscribe [https://spaceshipearthmissionlog.substack.com/subscribe?utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=CTA_4]

episode Carrie Norton: The Flywheel Project cover

Carrie Norton: The Flywheel Project

The Flywheel Project seeks to inspire hope and demonstrate progress by visually cataloging progress on the Drawdown solutions. Carrie Norton talks with us about her “who luck” in working with Paul Hawkin, author of Drawdown and The Ecology of Commerce who taught at one of her company’s first ever Green Business Basecamps and has been an inspiration to so much of her work. A seasoned impact entrepreneur, investor, and consultant, Carrie spent many years in the sustainable energy tech sector, including participating with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in 1998, being in senior management at Garage.com and IdeaLab, and training entrepreneurs on sustainable business. She is also is the co-founder of the Sustainable Business Council of Los Angeles. Her project is still in the beginning phases and is looking for collaborators. The Flywheel project aims to create a free and transparent global registry for verified carbon-reduction projects that correspond to the Drawdown solutions, a tool for collating, illustrating and navigating across our collective progress toward ecosystem regeneration through carbon reduction activities, a platform to match capital to viable projects, and an inspiring vehicle for citizen engagement through education and investment opportunities. We talk about her ideas have grown and evolved over the years along with understanding the leap from Sustainable to Regenerative. “We need both,” Carrie says. We also talk about some of her other future initiatives, Regen Learn and Global Regenerative Finance Initiative and the importance of self-honesty of regularly stepping back and asking ourselves “are we on the right path?” Carrie Norton https://www.greenbusinessbasecamp.com [https://www.greenbusinessbasecamp.com] https://www.carriemnorton.com [https://www.carriemnorton.com] https://www.linkedin.com/in/regenerativeeconomybuilder [https://www.linkedin.com/in/regenerativeeconomybuilder] Redesign Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/redesign/id1505429143 [https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/redesign/id1505429143] Drawdown by Paul Hawkin https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31624481-drawdown [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31624481-drawdown] The Ecology of Commerce by Paul Hawkin https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/89997.The_Ecology_of_Commerce [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/89997.The_Ecology_of_Commerce] Katie Patrick https://katiepatrick.com [https://katiepatrick.com] Jen Bolden https://www.jenboulden.com/ [https://www.jenboulden.com/] The Academy for Systems Change https://www.academyforchange.org [https://www.academyforchange.org] Donella Medows https://donellameadows.org [https://donellameadows.org/] Jim Collins interview on Tim Ferriss Show https://tim.blog/2019/02/18/jim-collins [https://tim.blog/2019/02/18/jim-collins] The Tipping Point - Malcolm Gladwell https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2612.The_Tipping_Point [https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2612.The_Tipping_Point] Simplify Language, Lee Shainis https://www.simplifylanguage.com [https://www.simplifylanguage.com] Zebras unite https://zebrasunite.coop [https://zebrasunite.coop] Open Heart Project - Susan Piver https://openheartproject.com [https://openheartproject.com] Trimtab Spacecamp Community https://trimtab.substack.com [https://trimtab.substack.com] Every year, the Buckminster Fuller Institute (https://www.bfi.org [https://www.bfi.org]) hosts a dynamic event called Trimtab Space Camp, and each event encourages participants to join or host a Mission, the collaborative learning component of this 8-week online event. episode Mark Smith: Electrons + Protons + Consciousness (eleprocon) cover

Mark Smith: Electrons + Protons + Consciousness (eleprocon)

Mark Smith was given a very unique vantage point when networking technology like email was emerging in the 1970s. In part 2 of the Design Science Synarchy mission log we discuss where we're at as a collective now during these technologically revolutionary times and the insights Mark was gifted then (almost 50 years ago during the first "Design Science Decade") about how mankind has been given the gift of learning to encode the electro-magnetic spectrum....and as a result we would be forced to Elect between the Pro and the Con. He joins this interview from outside his dome house in central Oregon, where Mark says "I’ve never seen so many rainbows." Steve talks about identifying true wealth as the kind that comes from recognizing nature and inter-connection. Mark was introduced to Bucky's work by a shared colleague, and was deeply inspired by R. Buckminster Fuller who challenged others to "Make the invisible, visible." Mark was also a participant in two coheARTs of the Design Science Studio, an art incubator founded out of the BFI, who have sought to revive Bucky's idea of the Design Science Decade for 2020-2030. Creators in the studio apply their whole systems knowledge to create (r)Evolutionary art, experiences and messages for a regenerative future that works for 100% of life. Mark and a small group of members of the DSS formed the Design Science Synarchy to support the founders of the Design Science Studio. We discuss what the Design Science Studio is and why artists are an extremely influential force in the world. Stephen Bau: Design Science Synarchy

Stephen Bau has been a vocal evangelist for the ideas of the Buckminster Fuller Institute and was the person who introduced me to my first Trimtab Spacecamp in 2020. Stephen is also a participant in both coheARTs of the Design Science Studio, an art incubator founded out of the BFI, who have sought to revive Bucky's idea of the Design Science Decade for 2020-2030. Creators in the studio apply their whole systems knowledge to create (r)Evolutionary art, experiences and messages for a regenerative future that works for 100% of life. Stephen and a small group of members of the DSS formed the Design Science Synarchy to support the founders of the Design Science Studio, then just when things seemed to be ramping up, a devastating car crash brought everything to a grinding halt. With all of the founders in the hospital, members of the Synarchy grappled with how they could fill in the gap of leadership conscientiously and provide support in the midst of the trauma. So instead an acceleration toward a third cohort there came an acute understanding that “Slowing down, resting and healing is our gift to the world.” We talk about the Synarchy, the arts, and community verses hierarchy, as well as Stephen's brilliant circular calendar he designed and why he chose to name his latest blog The Apocrypha on Substack. Stephen is a prolific writer, a designer and design mentor, and has been working tirelessly to understand the depth of R. Buckminster Fuller's quote "Love is metaphysical gravity." Curt McNamara: Trimtabs For Climate

Buckminster fuller said "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” Curt McNamara is well known in the Buckminster Fuller Institute community for his comprehensive study of Bucky's work, and is currently writing his own book called Bucky for Designers because he says we are all designers. First, Curt answers the question "What is a Trimtab?" We talk about utilizing the inherent energy within systems, Pattern Language, the geometry of influencing collective structures and their power to affect individual decisions in aggregate, and creating helpful nudges that help influence individual behavior within a system. Finally, Steve asks Curt: "What would Bucky Trimtab if he were alive today?"
