Stuck in Your Head: Songs to Learn Spanish is a beginner Spanish podcast built around short, catchy songs designed to lodge real Spanish phrases directly into your memory. If you've tried apps, flashcards, and Spanish lessons and still freeze when it's time to actually speak, this is for you. Instead of studying, you'll repeat. Instead of memorizing rules, you'll sing phrases until they come out automatically. Each episode follows or is inspired by The Layers Method, a proven approach to conversational Spanish that focuses on the high-frequency words real people actually use and the only thing that finally helped me actually speak Speak Spanish to real people. I'm just a student there, not a teacher but wanted to supplement the magic of the lessons with songs. I'm learning alongside you and want to share this for those that love a catchy hook. Repetitive. Real. Spanish phrases that stick. Perfect for: beginners, expats in Spain, travelers, auditory learners, and anyone who's tired of studying Spanish without ever speaking it. You can find the The Layers Method community I am learning Spanish in, linked in every episode. Learn Spanish through music and the top 300 words that will give you the world.

How To Remember 'This' vs 'That' in Spanish — The T Rule That Changed My Life

Want to learn how to speak spanish? https://readytospeakspanish.com/ [https://readytospeakspanish.com/] VERSE 1 Este, esta, esto — close and near, Estos, estas — plural, crystal clear. Ese, esa, eso — step back there, Eses, esas — distance in the air. CHORUS This and these have T's, that and those don't. This and these have T's, that and those don't. Este, esta, estos, estas — T is here. Ese, esa, esos, esas — T disappears. VERSE 2 One more layer, way back when, Aquel, aquella, aquello — distance again. Not just physical, but time and soul, Aquellos, aquellas — emotional control. CHORUS This and these have T's, that and those don't. This and these have T's, that and those don't. Este, esta, estos, estas — T is here. Ese, esa, esos, esas — T disappears. VERSE 3 This is me right now, I'm standing tall, Esta soy yo — present, here, and all. That was me, a step away, Esa fui yo — yesterday's way. But that one far, from long ago, Aquella fui yo — the past I know. BRIDGE Este, esta — close and near, Ese, esa — step back here. Aquel, aquella — way back when, Distance lives inside again. CHORUS This and these have T's, that and those don't. This and these have T's, that and those don't. Este, esta, estos, estas — T is here. Ese, esa, esos, esas — T disappears. CHORUS This and these have T's, that and those don't. This and these have T's, that and those don't. Aquel, aquella, aquello — way out there. Distance, time, and memory in the air. THE T RULE — MEMORY TRICK THIS & THESE = T's Este, esta, esto (this) Estos, estas (these) All have the T sound THAT & THOSE = NO T's Ese, esa, eso (that) Eses, esas (those) No T sound AQUEL = BONUS LAYER (Distance in Time & Emotion) Aquel, aquella, aquello (that — far away, long ago, emotionally distant) No T sound, but implies maximum distance KEY PHRASES — THREE DISTANCES EXPLAINED ESTE / ESTA / ESTO (This — Close & Present) Este café está bueno. = This coffee is good. Esta chica es mi amiga. = This girl is my friend. Esto es importante. = This is important. Estos libros son míos. = These books are mine. Estas noches son mágicas. = These nights are magical. Use for: things right next to you, the present moment, immediate reality ESE / ESA / ESO (That — Removed & Past) Ese hombre es profesor. = That man is a teacher. Esa película fue buena. = That movie was good. Eso no me importa. = That doesn't matter to me. Esos días fueron especiales. = Those days were special. Esas personas son buenas. = Those people are good. Use for: things a little further away, the recent past, general reference AQUEL / AQUELLA / AQUELLO (That Over There — Far & Distant) Aquel árbol está muy lejos. = That tree is very far away. Aquella noche fue inolvidable. = That night (long ago) was unforgettable. Aquello que pasó me marcó. = That (distant memory) that happened marked me. Aquellos tiempos eran diferentes. = Those times (long ago) were different. Aquellas personas ya no existen. = Those people (from way back) no longer exist. Use for: things physically far away, the distant past, emotional distance, time & memory THE SELENA EXAMPLE — WHY IT MATTERS In her song, Selena sings: "Yo fui aquella que sufrió por ti." (I was that one — long ago, emotionally distant — who suffered for you.) If she'd said "Yo fui esa que sufrió por ti," it would land differently. Less dramatic. Less reflective. Less painful. By using aquella, she's saying: "That version of me—from way back, from a completely different place, from an era I've moved past—that version suffered for you." It's not just grammar. It's storytelling. It's distance with weight. Comparison: "Esta soy yo." = This is me (right now, who I am today) "Esa fui yo." = That was me (the past, a general reference to old me) "Aquella fui yo." = That was me (long ago, emotionally distant, a different person entirely, a different era) WHY THE T RULE ACTUALLY WORKS English has "this" and "that." Point and you're done. Spanish gives you three levels: este (here), ese (there), aquel (way over there). But here's the trick: the T in este and estos/estas makes them stick in your brain. When you remember "T = close, no T = far," you're not just memorizing. You're encoding the concept of distance into the sound of the word itself. And that's when it stops being a rule and becomes intuition. CHORUS 1 — Quiero, pero hay muchas formas, de pedir lo que deseo en español. ¿Me traes…? ¿Puedo pedir…? ¿Me pones…? Dame, por favor. KEY PHRASES — RESTAURANT ORDERING The Four Main Ways to Ask ¿Me puedes traer...? (Can you bring me...?) — Most polite & formal — Used with waitstaff you've just met — "¿Me puedes traer un café?" = Can you bring me a coffee? ¿Puedo pedir...? (Can I order...?) — Most direct & natural — Used when ordering from menu — "¿Puedo pedir una tortilla?" = Can I order a tortilla? ¿Me pones...? (Will you give me...?) — Casual & friendly — More common in Spain — "¿Me pones un vino?" = Will you give me a wine? Dame / Tráeme (Give me / Bring me) — Most direct & informal — Used with regular servers or friends — "Dame un café, por favor" = Give me a coffee, please — "Tráeme pan" = Bring me bread Real Phrases You'll Use ¿Me puedes traer la cuenta? — Can you bring me the bill? ¿Puedo pedir sin cebolla? — Can I order it without onion? ¿Me pones agua con gas? — Will you give me sparkling water? Dame otro café, por favor — Give me another coffee, please Tráeme la carta — Bring me the menu ¿Me traes más pan? — Can you bring me more bread? ¿Puedo pedir agua? — Can I order water? ¿Me pones la misma cosa? — Will you give me the same thing? Dame un vino tinto — Give me a red wine Tráeme la cuenta cuando puedas — Bring me the bill when you can WHY THIS MATTERS You're sitting at a café. A server walks by. You need to order. In English, you say "I want" and it's fine. In Spanish, you have options—and each one changes the vibe. ¿Me puedes traer...? is the respectful opener. You're asking, not demanding. You're acknowledging the server as a person doing their job. ¿Puedo pedir...? is the natural one. It's how Spanish speakers order. It's not rude. It's direct and clear. ¿Me pones...? is the familiar one. This is what you hear in Spanish bars and cafés. It's warm. It means you're becoming a regular. Dame / Tráeme is the friendship one. By the third visit, when the server knows your order, you can say "Dame lo de siempre" (Give me the usual). That's when you know you belong. This song teaches you that there's no one way to order. There are many ways—and they're all right. What matters is that you're speaking. You're asking. You're part of the conversation. 🎧 Join the community that taught me to learn Spanish the right way: The Layers Method on Skool → https://www.skool.com/layersmethod/about?ref=bb309c98f57b4f1396f0ddbf25018f0e [https://www.skool.com/layersmethod/about?ref=bb309c98f57b4f1396f0ddbf25018f0e] Focus on the first 300 words. KEY PHRASES — SPAIN'S PARTY TALK The Essential Phrases You'll Hear Vale — Okay / Alright Venga — Come on / Let's go Un poco más — A little more Otra cerveza — Another beer ¿Quieres algo? — Do you want something? ¡Sí, por favor! — Yes, please! ¡Claro, amor! — Of course, love! ¿Tienes hambre? — Are you hungry? Friday night. A group of friends decides to go out. Within the first five minutes, you'll hear these exact phrases. Not from textbooks. From real people. Vale and venga are the glue of Spanish social life. They're not just words—they're the rhythm. Vale means "okay," but it's also "I understand," "I agree," "let's do it." Venga means "come on," but it's also an invitation, a push, a celebration wrapped in two syllables. Un poco más (a little more) is how Spanish speakers extend moments. It's not about the beer. It's about the time—staying longer, laughing harder, being together. ¿Quieres algo? (Do you want something?) is the universal offer. At a bar, at a party, at a friend's house. The answer is rarely just "no." It's usually Sí, quizás (Yeah, maybe)—because saying yes leaves room for connection, for spontaneity. This song teaches you the rhythm of Spanish social life. The call-and-response. The layers of voices building together. That's what it sounds like when you belong.
