My name is Julian Gavilanes. I am an actor, filmmaker and now podcaster in NYC, who has an ever-growing fascination with the artists journey. Furthermore, how they've uniquely managed to stick with it through all the inevitable adversity that seems to be a prerequisite for getting to where they want to go. Many artistic people will say, "you have to be delusional just to believe you even can." And this show attempts to explore how some of my favorite artists in the world learned to cross over from just believing that they could do this, to actually executing these "impossible" aspirations. Ideally, through these conversations we will impart some level of valuable insight for all of us who are struggling to keep pushing the rock up the hill. Attempt to find the best skills for prioritizing self-care inside and keeping positivity at the forefront of their hearts. Because at the end of the day, no matter what level you reach--it doesn't get and easier. It just gets different. But the good news is, you're not alone. And you're far from inadequate. So, enjoy the talks and stay inspired! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

episode Heather Brittain on Following Your Joy cover

Heather Brittain on Following Your Joy

Heather Brittain is an Actor, Filmmaker and Program Director for the Garden State Film Festival. Heather sits down with Julian to discuss the 20 year break she took from acting to have children and get a "steady job," only to come back 10 yers ago with a new found love for her original passion. What she discovered about herself in that long break from acting and how she's learned to apply her lived experiences into her work. She reminisces about meeting Julian at a casting workshop when she just got back into acting. And how they have stayed connected ever since. She talks about a small indie film she worked on as a an actor, that she was cast in with her actual son, that never came out. Reconciling with the upsetting nature of that being a common occurrence in the indie film scene for whatever reason--and the lengths she went to get all the footage from the director, to then turn around and bring the film to life from her own hands. What she learned about making movies during that period, and how important it was for her to find and collaborate with people who were better than she was. After having made her first movie, the itch was scratched and she was fully committed to a life as a filmmaker. She went on to produce and act in handfuls of award winning films, and started to understand the film festival circuit, until she eventually partnered with The Garden State Film Festival and became the Program Director, where she has now been for several years. She knows all the ins and outs of the film festival business, and coaches workshops for filmmakers who are interested in leveling up their approach to getting their films seen. She is a wealth of knowledge and as sweet as can be. I implore you to check out her group on Facebook, called The Film Festival Insider and follow along with her, if you're looking to level up. episode Finding my Rhythm cover

Finding my Rhythm

Happy Holidays y'all! I know it's been a minute since I've put up a new podcast, so I wanted to explain a bit of where I've been. It's been a busy season for me. And there have been a lot of lessons along the way. Mostly, relinquishing control that I don't posses. It's hard in my field, and maybe it's difficult across the board, but, but a handful of "let downs" have really helped me frame my perspective on what the value of my continued pursuit is for myself. Throwing in the towel would be the easy way out, but digging deeper and continuing to push through the most difficult times, have typically resulted in the biggest revelations in my own personal growth. So, this holiday season, I want you all to try and relinquish a bit of that control that you're not actually in possession of. I promise you, it'll do you good. I hope everyone has a safe, loving, cozy and relaxing holiday. And that as you reflect on 2024, you give yourself a bit of grace. It was a hard year for me. But I made it to the other side. And there's still so much work to do. But there's also a lot of acceptance to give myself. You too? episode Jon Lampley on Leaving It All On the Stage cover

Jon Lampley on Leaving It All On the Stage

Jon Lampley has made his name as a consummate player on trumpet and sousaphone. And if you haven't seen this man play, you are missing out on something magical. Jon sits down with Julian to discuss being a young kid, growing up in the church and bursting with musical inspiration. How he found trumpet and performing early and how he cut his teeth at The Ohio State University School of Music as well as within the schools Marching Band, which if you don't know their program, it's one of the best in the world! What leaving school and moving to New york city was like for him. The struggle of being an artist, but knowing there wasn't anything else he could do. How in 2015 he landed a gig in the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, helmed by vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Louis Cato and led earlier by the jazz, pop and R&B sensation Jon Batiste. And also how he co-founded the stellar jazz-funk group Huntertones, and has performed in front of tens of thousands at amphitheaters, arenas and festivals with jam-rockers O.A.R. But nonetheless, how it's been a difficult yet worthy task for him to find the balance in his life, from the high that comes from being on stage, to being off of it and recognizing his worth without his instrument. How spending time with those who fill him and and recharge his battery are becoming vital to his lifestyle now, and how even the greatest and most high energy shows of his life can leave him feeling drained and uncertain of how to do it over and over again. But without question, the love of the art form will always bring him back, and his energy on that stage will leave you mesmerized. He recorded a live album recently called, "Night Service," that Julian got to attend the live show, and he says, "it was a religious experience for me." Go tune into asap and find out for yourself. Stephanie Powers is an astrologer, author ("It's Just a Phase"), podcaster (Lightworker's Lounge) and artists. episode Brandon Ghorley on Why We Need Faith cover

Brandon Ghorley on Why We Need Faith

Brandon Ghorley is a singer, songwriter, keys player extraordinaire and band leader (The BGP, Timeshare) from the Pacific Northwest. Brandon sits down with Julian to discuss their 20 year friendship. How he found his voice in music at a young age and developed his character from within it. Julian had a lot of question about faith, and as a man of god, Brandon opened up to about his experience with the church, how music has become a strong component of his spiritually and how there's no playbook for accepting faith into your life, because it just has to be a daily choice. Brandon also opens up about the darker side of his seemingly joy-filled lifestyle by addressing all the fears of inadequacy he goes through on a regular basis. How he combats the voice in his head that tells him he's not done enough yet, and how he looks to his faith to remember that he's on the right path. And that everything he wants is coming his way. They also share a very special song that they produced and sent to Rob Dyrdek when he was producing his biographical children's cartoon, "Wild Grinders." And the song is STILL a banger! Brandon's new Single "Handful" with his band, Timeshare just came out, and I implore you to BLAST it while we still have these dog days of summer! And don't forget to speak good things into your life this week. Brandon says so!
