Episode 188: Don’t Finish The School Year Without Asking Yourself These 4 Questions

I have never run a marathon. My right knee gets sore when I drive 26.2 miles. That said, I have a lot of respect for people who have finished a marathon. My wife’s side of the family lives in Northeast Ohio and many of them have finished multiple marathons. They have even driven to other states to run in marathons in other cities. Inexplicable to me. Fun for them. Whether in person or on TV, you have seen marathon runners cross the finish line. Some of them have a big smile on their face, a pep in their step and look like they could keep running forever. On the other hand, others look disoriented and dehydrated and they stumble across the finish line and right into an ambulance. I think that the last day of school is very similar to the finish line of a marathon. Whether you walked, stumbled or sprinted across that finish line, you are about to do something that you shouldn’t do, yet… One of the worst things we can do as leaders is immediately shift into high gear getting ready for the next school year without reflecting on the year we just lived through. I want to help you “press pause” before you move into next school year. Episode 186: Confidence Is A Result, Not A Prerequisite

confidence noun us  /ˈkɑːn.fə.dəns/ uk  /ˈkɒn.fɪ.dəns/ the quality of being certain of your abilities or of having trust in people, plans, or the future prerequisite noun [ C ]   formal us  /ˌpriːˈrek.wə.zɪt/ uk  /ˌpriːˈrek.wɪ.zɪt/ something that must exist or happen before something else can exist or happen I think many private school leaders believe the following statement without realizing they believe it: “I’ll do that once I feel more confident.” The problem is that confidence rarely arrives first. If we wait until we feel confident to do hard things, we are less likely to do hard things. But, you don’t have to stay stuck any longer. Episode 185: There's No Such Thing As A Secret In A Private School (Let's Fix That)

Has this ever happened to you? You tell one person something in confidence. And then somehow, by the end of the day: * Two teachers are talking about it in the hallway * Three parents know * A board member texts you and says, “I heard that you said…” Do you? * Say to yourself, “Oh well, no such thing as a secret in a private school!” * Throw up your hands * Just figure “it is what it is” The problem with just giving up every time there is a leak is that “what you allow will continue.” A lack of confidentiality at your school negatively impacts trust, culture, and your reputation as a leader. We are not going to just settle. We are not just going to accept that this is impossible to change.
