Sobre Drilled

Drilled is a true-crime climate change podcast exposing how corporate corruption and political operatives built decades of climate denial and delay. Hosted and reported by award-winning investigative climate journalists and led by Amy Westervelt, each season unravels new evidence of deception, disinformation, and the power structures keeping real climate solutions out of reach. In 2016, Facebook Live was just getting started—the first baby step of the video content universe we know today. It helped make the Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline a global concern, but it also gave the pipeline company and the private security firm it hired a whole host of new tools to shape the narrative around those protests. At the 10-year mark after Standing Rock, Drilled teams up with High Country News to look at the early days of corporate digital propaganda, how it worked, and how it connects to the massive disinformation efforts we’re dealing with today. Reported and written by investigative reporter Alleen Brown, and culled from thousands of never-before-published internal documents from private security firm Tiger Swan, The Propagandist offers a unique window into the world of corporate espionage and what it has to do with the disinformation ecosystem we’re still dealing with today.Drilled: The Propagandist begins on August 25th. Pushkin+ subscribers can hear all three episodes early and ad-free. Find Pushkin+ on the Drilled show page on Apple Podcasts or at pushkin.fm/plus.

Welcome to The Propagandist

10 years ago, rural North Dakota became the hub of one of the largest Indigenous-led protests in decades, and one of the largest climate protests ever in U.S. history: Standing Rock. What started as a protest against a pipeline turned into a political flashpoint thanks to social media. The pipeline company's private security contractors exploited the moment, using propaganda to fan the flames of long-simmering divisions in the community and amplify the voices of groups that were pro-pipeline or anti-protestor. A decade later, the community is still divided and the tactics used at Standing Rock have been used to sew division all over the country. Never-before-published documents give us a unique insight into the strategy deployed back then, and into how things got the way they are today. Drilled: The Propagandist begins on August 25. Should we mess with nature? | Introducing How We Survive

The climate crisis is escalating. We have to decarbonize our economy, but we’re moving too slowly. So, what’s the backup plan? This season of “How We Survive” is about engineering nature: large-scale interventions that could be our last hope. We’ll explore technology that could alter our weather patterns, transform our planet, and possibly save us all from the worst outcomes of the climate crisis. Or lead to catastrophic, unintended consequences. In this episode, Amy explores one of the wildest climate interventions to date: de-extinction. She takes a tour of Colossal Labs, the $10 billion Dallas startup betting it can reverse-engineer extinction itself, to see how they plan to turn pigeons into dodos and Asian elephants into woolly mammoths. But whether it’s bringing back the woolly mammoth from extinction or shooting sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere, just because we can mess with nature, does that mean we should?  See omnystudio.com/listener [https://omnystudio.com/listener] for privacy information.

The News | Scene on Radio

Scene on Radio is a two-time Peabody-nominated podcast that dares to ask big, hard questions about who we are—really—and how we got this way. Their new season, The News, asks: what’s really wrong with the news? Some have called the news media the oxygen of a functioning democracy. But if that’s true, America’s lungs are in rough shape. Most Americans say they don’t trust the media. The business model for local journalism has all but collapsed. And we all know about the barrage of misinformation that flows from our splintered mediascape. You can’t separate the state of our news media from the other profound crises that America keeps on failing to solve. John Biewen explores the roots of this crises. Here's episode 1. First America from Critical Frequency

Hosted and reported by Indigenous author Rebecca Nagle (with production by Critical Frequency!) and featuring leading Native historians, First America shares the true story of how the United States came to be, and how our current political moment was 250 years in the making.  We’ve all been told the American Revolution was fought over taxation and representation. But that's not what the Declaration of Independence says. According to our founders, in their own words, what they were most upset about was Native Americans. How did we all miss that? Rebecca sits down with historian Ned Blackhawk (Western Shoshone) to talk about how hunger for Indigenous land drove the Revolution.
