Acerca de GRR: Global Race Report

Some say, “All roads lead to Rome.”But all roads lead to race, as well. Race. It always looms. It can spill out, messily, at any moment. It can do this, not only where you are, but anywhere. And any media which talks realistically about race must make these facts part of the context. GRR — Global Race Report — does. Hosted and produced by Harry Allen, each weekly edition of Global Race Report gives you a 360º view — past, present, and future — of how race works in our world. Neither screechy nor timid, Global Race Report speaks frankly, with an eye on communicating complex ideas in a straightforward way. Global Race Report…with Harry Allen. It’s the future…of race….

GRR 004: How The NY Times Succeeds on Hip - Hop...and Fails On Race + KRS - One on the “Crystallization” of Malcolm X

On this edition of GRR: Global Race Report, in light of the recent and ongoing HIP-HOP 50TH anniversary celebrations, I share thoughts which I recently published about why journalism on hip-hop often fails when it comes to race. I cite The New York Times as a recent example. Then, for our singular GRR feature, X100: The Malcolm X Century, we speak with a hip-hop legend, KRS-One, on why he—possibly more than any other hip-hop artist—has frequently quoted and referenced the great Malcolm X. GRR 003: Policing “The Chicago Way !” + What If Malcolm & Martin Had Joined Forces?

In May 2023, a print essay hit the Windy City with gale force. Bluntly titled, “Hundreds of Chicago cops can’t testify in court,” [https://thetriibe.com/2023/05/hundreds-of-chicago-cops-cant-testify-in-court/] it told the story of the recently leaked Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office’s so-called “Brady” and “Do Not Call” lists. (Cook County is the center of the Chicago metro area.) These leaked lists are documents local prosecutors had long kept under wraps, because, on them, are the names of “hundreds of current and former Chicago police officers [who] can never be called to testify...because they have histories of misconduct or untruthfulness that would undermine their credibility on the [witness] stand.” Reporter Max Blaisdell, the author of the piece from which that amazing find comes, will tell us what it means for Chicago, and policing, in general. Then, on our unique GRR feature, X100: The Malcolm X Century, we’ll talk with community organizer Makani Themba, as she tells us not only why Malcolm X still matters, but why he is an exemplar, in her work as an activism strategist. GRR 002: Put Your Eyes Where My Race Can See + What To Read When You’re In Jail

On GRR: Global Race Report, we talk with NYU professor Nicholas Mirzoeff about Mizzy (aka Bacari-Bronze O’Garro), the famed, Black, 18-year-old, UK TikTok prankster. Plus, we analyze the “reckless eyeballing” controversy that erupted when Mizzy’s gaze didn’t go where a white man wanted it to go.  Then, GRR continues our unique special feature, X100: The Malcolm X Century. Every week, for 100 weeks — once for every year since his birth — we’ll present an author, artist, educator, activist, or other thought leader talking about the significance of Malcolm X; his life, his influence, and what he means today.  Today, our X100 guest is journalist Chris Hedges. Hedges has worked as a war correspondent for The New York Times, and his 2002 book, War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. GRR 001: The Experimental Black Community That Never Was + Malcolm X On White People

On GRR: Global Race Report [https://globalracereport.buzzsprout.com/], we’ll be talking with Thomas Healy, author of Soul City; a book about the birth, life, and death of a Southern town; one planned, founded, and built, in the 1960s, by Black Americans. Then, GRR will be introducing a regular feature, about which we're especially excited. In less than two years, it’ll be a century since the birth of el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz, or, as he is more commonly known, Malcolm X. In the years since his tragic and untimely death, Malcolm X’s star has only brightened. Today, he is the subject of books, TV shows, movies, and plays; his name and image are on posters, murals, clothing, and postage stamps. Streets are named after him. Schools are named after him. Every day, young people, both in and outside of those schools, learn about his words and ideas; concepts which remain not only relevant, but often futuristic. As part of our celebration of this great leader, GRR: Global Race Report is launching a feature you’ll only hear, here. It’s called X100: The Malcolm X Century. Every week, for 100 weeks — once for every year since his birth — we’ll present an author, artist, educator, activist, or other thought leader talking about the significance of Malcolm X; his life, his influence, and what he means today. Today, our first X100 guest is civil rights attorney Sherrilyn Ifill, former president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. This is something we’re really excited about, and, most of all, it’s something you’ll only hear, here, on GRR: Global Race Report.
