John Chakalos oli multimiljonääri, joka löydettiin joulukuussa 2013 ammuttuna omasta sängystään. Aluksi tutkijat epäilivät henkirikoksen liittyvän järjestäytyneeseen rikollisuuteen. Teoria kuitenkin hylättiin nopeasti, sillä rikollisjärjestöjen uhrit katosivat tyypillisesti jäljettömiin sen sijaan, että heidät surmattaisiin omissa kodeissaan. Tutkijoiden huomio kääntyi vähitellen Johnin perheeseen, jonka sisäiset suhteet olivat myrskyisät. Kolme vuotta John Chakalosin murhan jälkeen perhettä kohtasi uusi tragedia, kun toinenkin perheenjäsen katosi mystisissä olosuhteissa.
