Episode 1: Taking a Deep Dive into Rural Virginia
Hello, and welcome to the “Rural Virginia Podcast” with your hosts, Terry and Ben!
Today, we’re diving into the heart of the Commonwealth—exploring the diverse and essential landscape of rural Virginia and highlighting how towns like Culpeper are integral threads in this rich tapestry.
Understanding Rural Virginia:
Rural Virginia stretches far beyond open fields, encompassing regions with distinct character and challenges. Southwest Virginia—west of I‑81 and the New River—offers rugged beauty, natural attractions like the Devil’s Bathtub and High Knob, and an emerging “new economy” around ATV trail systems such as the Spearhead Trails. Despite a strong work ethic, the region struggles to attract employers. Cultural hubs like the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace in Abingdon showcase crafts, music, food, and outdoor experiences, while the Clinch and Powell River watersheds offer hiking, biking, canoeing, and caving.
Southside Virginia, defined by its flat cornfields and affordable land, faces new pressures as data center development grows—raising questions about land use, community impact, and preserving farming traditions. Across all rural regions, shared needs include job creation, workforce development, education, broadband, and healthcare. We encourage state leaders and candidates to visit these areas, meet residents, and understand the “check‑to‑check” voters whose voices deserve to be heard.
Culpeper – A Glimpse into Rural Vibrancy:
Culpeper is a perfect example of rural vitality. With roughly 126,395 acres in production—growing wheat, soybeans, cattle, and sheep—its agricultural heritage thrives alongside specialty farms. Seasonal farmers’ markets, like the one near the Depot sponsored by Culpeper Renaissance, Inc., bring fresh, local goods to the community.
Its historic downtown serves as an “economic engine” with boutique retail, diverse dining, and a tourism sector energized by preserved Civil War battlefield lands with state park potential. The “spirits industry” is flourishing too, with distilleries, craft breweries, and wineries like Belmont Farm Distillery, Beer Hound Brewery, Grey Ghost Vineyards, and the veteran‑owned Mountain Run Winery.
Culpeper also shines as one of Virginia’s safest towns, offering essential services such as UVA Health facilities, a free public library, and workforce‑focused programs at Germanna Community College. Local business growth is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and the Small Business Development Center, while leadership development is fostered through programs like the Virginia Rural Leadership Institute (VRLI), which recently welcomed a Culpeper resident to its 2025 cohort.
Supporting the Rural Tapestry:
Organizations like the Center for Rural Virginia play a crucial role in sustaining rural communities. Established in 2004 by the General Assembly, the Center advances economic development, job creation, workforce readiness, education, infrastructure, and healthcare. Its Virginia Rural Leadership Institute offers immersive, “need‑blind” leadership programs across regions like Southern, Southwest, and Northern Neck Virginia, covering agriculture, broadband, rural health, housing, tourism, and entrepreneurship.
Through events like the Governor’s Summit on Rural Prosperity and the Rural Caucus Reception, the Center brings together state, business, and civic leaders to collaborate on broadband expansion, energy, small‑business support, and more. Their work underscores a simple truth: when rural Virginia thrives, the entire Commonwealth prospers.
