Episode 10 - Opal Gay

In the final episode of Connecting Our Roots, C5 scholar and host of the podcast Opal Gay sits down with their HPRS Leadership Coach Marcia Lee. Opal discusses their research and community organizing efforts on policing and health inequities in Atlanta. Further, they identify how their values of community and joy shape their passion for this arena of health policy.

Episode 9 - Ashley Ortiz Chico

In episode 9, we talk with Cohort 6 scholar Ashley Ortiz Chico about her research on environmental justice and coloniality in Puerto Rico. We overview how community shows up in her work, and Ashley recaps the Talaona session co-organized by HPRS scholars for Summer Institute.

Episode 8 - Adrian Luis Manriquez

In this episode, Cohort 5 scholar and alumnus Adrian Manriquez discusses his dissertation research on how adherence to masculine gender norms impacts the health outcomes of Latino men. He also explores the role of reflexivity in qualitative scholarship and concludes by expressing gratitude for the HPRS community's influence on his personal and professional growth.

Episode 7 - Manuel Joseph Galvan

In this episode, we hear from C4 scholar Manuel Galvan about his journey as a high school teacher into the PhD and health policy arena. We hear about his field experiments on institutional discrimination and how his values of evidence-based justice inform his work.

Episode 6 - Latesha K. Harris

In this episode we talk to C6 scholar Latesha K. Harris about her research on police violence and cardiometabolic health, and she shares how the murder of George Floyd and the 2020 re-insurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement catalyzed her values of belonging, justice, knowledge, and leadership.
