Several African governments have announced steps to cope with fuel shortages [https://apnews.com/article/africa-iran-war-economic-impact-aad28b599c8367a77458167842d53b47] and rising prices [https://apnews.com/article/iran-war-africa-economy-oil-inflation-7decf5392c32718ae05a3d9d0b3906c0]. Scientists say the division, first observed in 2015, has escalated into a violent and largely one-sided conflict that some are comparing to a human civil war. Two Arizona-based researchers who have studied the chimpanzees firsthand say the cause of the split remains unclear. The chimpanzees, part of the Ngogo community, have since divided into western and central groups. Negrey, who has been involved with the Ngogo Chimpanzee Project for 13 years, said the violence has been driven almost entirely by one side. “In fact, all of the killing has been by the Western Ngogo chimpanzees. The Central Ngogo chimpanzees have been slowly pushed further and further east in the territory. They’re basically being pushed out of any safe place at all,” he said. Researchers say the conflict is not driven by a lack of food. The park contains abundant fruiting trees and resources. Instead, they believe space and group size may be contributing factors. “Over time, I think probably something to do with the community grew so large that they weren’t able to hold it together anymore as one cohesive chimpanzee community,” said Kevin Langergraber, a professor at Arizona State University who has studied the group for more than 20 years.
