The Central Ngogo chimpanzees have been slowly pushed further and further east in the territory. They’re basically being pushed out of any safe place at all,” he said. Researchers say the conflict is not driven by a lack of food. The park contains abundant fruiting trees and resources. Instead, they believe space and group size may be contributing factors. “Over time, I think probably something to do with the community grew so large that they weren’t able to hold it together anymore as one cohesive chimpanzee community,” said Kevin Langergraber, a professor at Arizona State University who has studied the group for more than 20 years.
