Over First Look, Final Word
Finally, a movie podcast that takes place in a car! Pete and Trevor are movie fans with nothing better to do. Come along with us on our drive to and from the cinema. On the drive there, we’ll be discussing general background on the movie and talk about our expectations. On the drive back again, you will hear spoiler talk about our first impressions of the movie having just exited the theatre. Will we see a “stone-cold masterpiece”? Will we see a stinker to end all stinkers? Will we run into traffic and miss the trailers? We’ll answer all these questions and more!
The Bride! / Marty Supreme / Frankenstein
Pete! and Trevor! took a trip to see Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! starring Jessie Buckley (The Bride / Ida / Mary Shelley), Christian Bale (Frank / Frankenstein’s Monster), Annette Bening (Dr. Euphronius), Peter Sarsgaard (Jake Wiles), Penélope Cruz (Myrna Mallow), and Jake Gyllenhaal (Ronnie Reed). Listen for our immediate reactions after leaving the theatre. If you think you know what this movie is like, you are wrong. We also wrapped up our Project Oscars with a discussion of Marty Supreme (Josh Safdie (Director), Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher) and Frankenstein (Guillermo del Toro (Director), Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth). Hamnet / The Secret Agent / Train Dreams
As Oscar season is dwindling to a close, Pete and Trevor narrow their focus on three Best Picture nominees: Train Dreams (directed by Clint Bentley, starring Joel Edgerton, Felicity Jones), The Secret Agent (directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, starring Wagner Moura), and Hamnet (directed by Chloé Zhao, starring Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal). For our feature Hamnet, we provide our immediate reactions after watching the film. Spoiler alert: this movie is a powerhouse of sadness. Next week we cover The Bride and finish our Oscar project with recaps of Frankenstein and Marty Supreme. If you would like to share your favourite film of the year with us, leave us a voicemail (via audio clip) at firstlookfinalwordpod@gmail.com Train Dreams: 5:30 Secret Agent: 14:20 Hamnet Review: 26:15 Spoilers: 31:57
Wuthering Heights
Pete and Trevor crossed the misty moors, while making many stylish costume changes, to see Wuthering Heights. Emerald Fennell’s third feature, starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Catherine and Heathcliff, will likely be as divisive as her previous film Saltburn. Listen in to hear our immediate reactions after leaving the theatre to find out which side we fall on. This also marked our third entry in our ongoing Project Oscar Part 2, where we cover every film nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. This week we covered F1 (directed by Joseph Kosinski, starring Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem) and Bugonia (directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons). Next week we will be covering The Secret Agent and Train Dreams. Project Oscars: 09:58 Withering Heights Review: 25:37 Spoilers: 41:00
Sentimental Value
Pete and Trevor ditch their third co-host, a car which is really more like a character, for Pete’s basement, which again, is more like a character…to watch Sentimental Value. Directed by Joachim Trier, the Norwegian Neon-financed family drama took Cannes by storm, eventually resulting in racking up several Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director, and acting noms for its entire main cast (Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning). Subscribe to the podcast to hear us discuss each Oscar move nominated for Best Picture in the coming weeks. Project Oscars: 2:12 Sentimental Value Review: 25:52 Spoilers: 39:28
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Pete and Trevor covered themselves in iodine and strapped on some blonde wigs to see 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The direct follow up to Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 2025 film, TBT sees Nia DaCosta take the helm, with Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell and Alfie Williams returning. Samson, the very confident infected alpha, may just show up to wish everyone luck. Listen to the podcast to hear our immediate thoughts after leaving the theatre! This week marks the beginning of Project Oscars 2, where we cover each film nominated for best picture. While we don’t yet know the nominees, it’s a safe bet that One Battle After Another and Sinners will be among the nominees.
