110 ICU Admissions to Rebuilding Her Life: Meghan's Story With Stiff Person Syndrome and CRPS
Meghan was 16 — an athlete, a high-achiever, a healthy teenager — when her body began doing things no one could explain. Sudden symptoms rapidly escalated into a 32-hour seizure, a ten-day coma, and the temporary loss of her mind and mobility. Over twelve years, Meghan faced more than 110 ICU admissions, relied on a feeding tube and wheelchair, and exhausted the country's top medical institutions before running out of options.
Along the way, she was diagnosed with rare conditions including Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). In this episode, Meghan shares—in her own words—what those twelve years were really like.
Danielle Howley and guest host Tiffany Jackson, ND, sit down with Meghan and her mother Cindy to discuss their long road of advocacy, turning to functional medicine, and Meghan’s step-by-step process of rebuilding her life. This isn't a story of a tidy resolution, but one of endurance and what became possible after a decade of searching. Meghan's experience is described by her care team as one of extreme severity — it is not a representation of typical results, and it is not medical advice.

Meghan spent more than a decade navigating severe neurological and immune illness, including diagnoses of Stiff Person Syndrome and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, more than 110 ICU admissions, and a long period of profound debilitation that began suddenly when she was sixteen. Today, she shares her story in her own words, reporting she is mobile, cognitively clear, and rebuilding her life. Her experience is described by her care team as one of extreme severity and is not representative of typical outcomes.
Cindy is Meghan's mother and was her primary medical advocate throughout her illness—including when Meghan was a minor and Cindy made all medical decisions on her behalf. Her story reflects the emotional and logistical reality of navigating complex chronic illness as a parent: the hospitalizations, diagnoses, and the persistence needed to keep searching when conventional pathways fall short.
Disclosure: Meghan and Cindy are former patient and family of Deeper Healing Medical Wellness Center and are sharing their personal experience. No compensation was provided in exchange for sharing this story. Meghan's mother Cindy made all medical decisions during the period Meghan was a minor; Meghan is now an adult and shares her own story in her own words.
