Candace Pert Proved The Mind-Body Connection | Pamela Ryckman
Did you know that emotions can affect how cells behave? If you are into mind-body wellness this episode of The Seena Podcast is required curriculum; I’m beyond excited to speak with bestselling author Pamela Ryckman about her biography on Dr. Candace Pert. Pamela Ryckman is an Emmy-award winning producer, former NY Times journalist, reiki practitioner, speaker and writer.

Candace Pert was an iconic woman who left an iconic legacy. She was a brilliant neuroscientist and pharmacologist who made major discoveries in the face of many hurdles. She discovered the brain’s opiate receptor in the 1970s — the specific docking site where substances like morphine and the body’s own natural opioids - endorphins - bind. That discovery helped launch modern neuropeptide research. What made her especially influential as a pioneer for the “mind-body connection” was what came next:
Pert found that emotions are not just “in the head”, as previously assumed.
Instead, emotions are biochemical events carried through the body by peptides and their receptors.
She famosuly called these biochemicals the “molecules of emotion.”
Basically, she could prove that the mind and body are one, because she found that neuropeptides — tiny protein-like signaling molecules — are produced not only in the brain, but throughout the body.
She also discovered that receptors for these peptides exist all over the body,
including in the immune system, endocrine glands, gut, and nervous system.
Said more briefly: Emotions trigger biochemical signals, those signals influence cellular activity, so
peptides and receptors help translate emotional states into physical responses.
