Les mer EPOCH: American History Stories

The America we know today was shaped by moments of choice, chance, courage, and consequence. EPOCH: American History Stories is a narrative history podcast about the people, events, and turning points that made the United States what it is. From revolution and ideology to inventions, conflict, and cultural change, each episode unpacks a single story and asks: why did this moment matter, and why does it still matter now? The show is hosted by Nick Rogers, creator of Up Ship! The Airship History Podcast, and Liam Rogers, producer and curious non-historian. British by birth but unapologetically obsessed with the United States, they bring admiration, curiosity, and an outsider’s perspective to America’s past. Expert historians and writers join the conversation for relaxed discussions that explore American history as it was lived and experienced. Together, they challenge the idea that America “doesn’t have history”. It really does… New episodes every two weeks.

The Craziest True Stories in American History

In this episode of EPOCH: American History Stories, we dive into some of the wildest true stories in American history — the kind of stories that sound invented, exaggerated, or straight out of a movie, but really happened. From the deadly rivalry that ended in the Burr-Hamilton duel, to the shocking kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh’s baby, we explore moments where American history turns strange, dark, and deeply dramatic. We also look at the extraordinary story of Theodore Roosevelt being shot and still insisting on speaking, the terrifying Tylenol murders that changed consumer safety forever, and the grim, desperate ordeal of the Donner Party. Along the way, we visit the eerie case of Typhoid Mary, the woman who became one of the most infamous figures in public health history, and the unbelievable Great Molasses Flood, when a wave of molasses tore through Boston with deadly consequences. This is an episode full of disaster, crime, survival, political violence, and sheer historical absurdity — proof that sometimes the craziest stories in American history are the true ones.

episode The Five Minutes That Changed the War: Midway cover

The Five Minutes That Changed the War: Midway

In June 1942, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a battle unfolded that would change the course of the Second World War. At Midway, the United States Navy set a trap for the Imperial Japanese Navy. What followed was a chaotic carrier battle where timing, intelligence, and chance proved decisive. In the space of just five minutes on the morning of June 4th, three Japanese aircraft carriers – veterans of Pearl Harbor – were fatally struck by American dive bombers. In that moment, the balance of the Pacific War shifted. In this episode, we explore the build-up to Midway, the battle itself, and why it marked a turning point – but not the end – of the war. If you enjoyed this episode, follow EPOCH: American History Stories for more deep dives into the events, people, and moments that shaped history.

episode Six Places that Made us Love America cover

Six Places that Made us Love America

In our very first episode, Nick and Liam kick off EPOCH: American History Stories with a simple idea: if you want to understand America, start with the places that tell its story. From a house built on top of a waterfall, to a California “castle” where Hollywood and politics mixed by the pool, to a theme park that’s secretly a city with tunnels — these locations reveal something bigger than architecture: ambition, conflict, reinvention, spectacle, and the stories America tells about itself. FEATURED PLACES IN THIS EPISODE 1. Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) — the battle that became a turning point in the Civil War, and a landscape that still feels like a national argument made physical. 2. Fallingwater (Pennsylvania) — Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece that doesn’t just frame nature… it moves in with it. 3. Hearst Castle (California) — William Randolph Hearst’s hilltop fantasy built over decades, part museum, part movie set, part power statement. 4. Sunnylands Estate (Rancho Mirage, California) — a mid-century modern “Camp David of the West,” where global leaders met in the desert. 5. St. Augustine (Florida) — the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in what is now the U.S., where empires (and tourist myths) collide. 6. Walt Disney World (Florida) — a world built on storytelling… and a hidden logistics system that keeps the illusion intact. MOMENTS YOU’LL HEAR 1. Why Gettysburg still feels like history with the volume turned up 2. The “waterfall view” request that became “let’s build the house on the waterfall” 3. Hearst Castle as a monument to media power, collecting, and pure excess 4. How Sunnylands quietly became a backdrop for real diplomacy 5. St. Augustine’s surprisingly layered story: Spain, forts, Florida, and folklore 6. The Disney World detail that makes you realize: this isn’t a park — it’s infrastructure wearing a costume ABOUT THE SHOW EPOCH: American History Stories is a light, conversational history podcast where we pull big American moments into the present through places, people, and pop-culture-scale storytelling. Liker at det er både Podcaster (godt utvalg) og lydbøker i samme app, pluss at man kan holde Podcaster og lydbøker atskilt i biblioteket.
