Humanities in Psychiatry (Part 2)

Welcome to the Association for Academic Psychiatry Podcast! This podcast series is designed to highlight topics relevant to academic psychiatrists worldwide. Our third episode features a panel discussion about the humanities and psychiatry with Drs. Mary Blazek, Meg Chisolm, and David Elkin. Dr. Blazek is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, where she directs the Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic and the Medical Humanities Path of Excellence. She holds a Master of Education in Health Professions from the Johns Hopkins School of Education and served as a Design Partner Fellow of the inaugural Harvard Macy Art Museum-based Health Professions Education Fellowship. She employs the arts to engage medical students at the interface between medicine and the humanities, enhance their development as emerging physicians, and promote wellness in physicians and patients. Dr. Chisolm is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Johns Hopkins University, with a secondary appointment in the department of Internal Medicine. She is a member of the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence and the Director of the Paul McHugh Program for Human Flourishing where she uses the arts and humanities to explore the ‘big questions’ with medical learners. She completed the Harvard Macy Institute Art Museum-based Health Professions Education fellowship and is a certified Visual Thinking Strategies facilitator and coach. Dr. Elkin is a clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UCSF, co-coordinator for medical student education and co-director of the Consultation Liaison Service at ZSFG. He also heads the hospital's Physician Well-Being Committee, is an active member of the hospital's ethics committee, and serves as a physician sponsor for Schwartz Rounds. His areas of interest include education and pedagogy, critical thinking, ethics and the medical humanities.
