As a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, doctor of nursing practice, and CEO of Caring for the Caregiver, Dr. Caryn Blair is all too familiar with caregiver burnout. She has made it her mission to increase awareness of the plight of the family caregiver and create dialogue centered on solutions to support this integral part of our society. The Caregiver Empowerment Zone is precisely that—a supportive space that offers resources, education, and encouragement to caregivers so they can provide the best care for their loved ones and themselves. This podcast highlights the intense emotional, mental, and physical toll caregiving can take on an individual. The message is clear – while you strive to provide the best possible care, perfection is an unrealistic expectation. As a caregiver, your responsibilities are self-care, to seek support, efficient medication management, and keeping your well-being at the forefront. This new biweekly podcast will offer comprehensive dementia care support and guidance to family caregivers like you every other Monday morning on your favorite podcast player app for free. If you've ever struggled with the hefty task of caregiving for a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer's or Alzheimer's Dementia, you're not alone, and you don't have to do it alone. Let this show, the research-based information I share, and the community of fellow caregivers be of support to you. episode Embracing the Caregiver Role cover

Embracing the Caregiver Role

Caregivers provide a vital service in our society but often struggle to address their own needs and wellbeing. Some caregivers assume their role out of obligation of being a spouse or immediate family member, while others never label themselves as a caregiver and are often unpaid and under-resourced. In this episode, Dr. Caryn explores what it means to be a caregiver, why so many avoid identifying as caregivers, and how caregivers fill a critical gap in health care systems. In this episode, you'll also hear: * Reviewing different types of caregivers * Potential pitfalls of unidentified caregivers * Essential role of caregivers in health outcomes Must-listen moments: [00:02:36] The first approach to addressing the potential needs of a caregiver is identifying the individual caregiver. [00:04:15] Unidentified caregivers may be exposed to experiencing unmet needs and personal adversities directly from providing care. [00:04:40] If you are a caregiver, acknowledge that you are. Know that caregivers are essential to healthcare teams as they often serve as informants on the status of patients who cannot advocate for themselves. episode Addressing Caregiver Adversity cover

Addressing Caregiver Adversity

Currently, over 6 million individuals in the US are living with Alzheimer's dementia (AD), and that number could potentially skyrocket to 75 million within the next decade. AD is a progressive brain disease that appears in two types, either early onset in people 60 or younger or late onset in people 65 or older. In both types, executive brain functions such as memory, language, decision-making, and judgment are severely diminished, leading to the necessity of a caregiver. Over 80% of caregivers for those living with AD are informal caregivers, such as family members or friends, who are rarely, if ever, prepared for the mental, physical, and emotional challenges brought on by caregiving. In this episode, Dr. Caryn breaks down alarming statistics surrounding informal caregivers for AD patients while focusing on solutions nursing can offer to alleviate caregiver burden. In this episode, you'll also hear: * Identifying informal caregivers * Understanding dementia and caregiver burden * Benefits of nursing and respite services Must-listen moments: [00:05:44] Alzheimer's dementia is one of the costliest societal conditions at a quarter of a trillion dollars annually to the healthcare system. [00:07:58] Caregiver burden is a multi-faceted, multi-dimensional concept that's based on the perception of strain related to the care that the caregiver provides. [00:12:05] Rest, or temporary delay, respite for the caregiver of Alzheimer's dementia care recipients can reduce stress symptoms of depression and increase resilience. episode Alzheimer's Dementia Caregiver Support Guide cover

Alzheimer's Dementia Caregiver Support Guide

Welcome to the Caregiver Empowerment Zone Podcast! I'm your host Dr. Caryn Blair, and I started this podcast to increase awareness of the need to offer maximum support to caregivers across the globe. I intend to shed light on the various physical and mental health issues caregivers face without adequate support and how we can work together to address this national and global challenge. In this episode, you'll also hear: * Common threads of caregivers * Informal vs. formal caregivers * Growing need for caregiver support Must-listen moments: [00:01:09] Along my journey, I saw some common threads. I notice patients desire to heal at home, expire at home, and want education for themselves and their family members regarding medical interventions required in the home setting. Lastly, I notice that patients and family members desire support. [00:10:34] Caregivers are at risk of mortality and stress-related physical and psychiatric morbidity. They have a higher prevalence of depression and anxiety compared to the general population. [00:11:51] Formal and informal caregivers provide an excellent service to society. The time has come for humanity to acknowledge, give close attention, and support caring for caregivers.
