On this day, God’s work of redemption stood complete. God had come down to become man at Christmas, he had accomplished salvation on the cross, he had ascended back to glory that the God-man would sit on heaven’s throne. Now on this festival of Pentecost, he pours out his Spirit to live in the hearts of his people and bestows gifts from the Spirit that we might take the message of salvation accomplished to a waiting world. By pouring out his Spirit, he founded the Church, empowering it with the Spirit and sending it out to gather the harvest of souls won by his Son, Jesus. The two young men before us this morning – Jude Booher and Bryar Murphy – have been confirmed (strengthened) in the central teachings of Scripture, using Dr Martin Luther’s Small Catechism as a guide. They have grasped the basic doctrines of God’s Word and are ready to become communicant members of this congregation. By no means have they mastered all the teachings of Scripture or made additional study unnecessary. In fact, it is our prayer that the instruction they have received be only the beginning of their spiritual growth through regular use of the Word. God bless and keep these two confirmands in his grace all their days. When Thomas questioned him, Jesus pointed to a way that they knew personally. “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” The gospel is the most inclusive message in the whole world – it is meant for every man, woman, and child who has ever lived! But it is also the most exclusive. It says that salvation can be found in only one place: the person of Jesus Christ.
