The Science of leading and dealing with Emotions

In this week's episode of "The 5 Minute Team Leader," hosted by Jason Moore, the founder of Teamific, the team and culture-building app, we explore the profound role of emotions in leadership. Emotions are a constant presence, affecting both leaders and those they lead. Discover the science behind emotions and practical actions to enhance your emotional agility. Despite dealing with emotions throughout our lives, understanding and managing them remains challenging. The neuroscience behind emotional agility begins with the concept of labeling emotions. Psychologists emphasize that naming emotions is the first step in effectively dealing with them. The brain processes emotions in a complex manner, with various regions lighting up during strong emotional experiences. However, many struggle to accurately identify what they're feeling due to societal norms, suppression of emotions, and a lack of emotional vocabulary. Emotional agility is a critical leadership skill. By mastering the science behind emotions and implementing these practical actions, you'll not only navigate your own emotions effectively but also foster a more emotionally intelligent and connected team. Being future focused will supercharge your career.

In this episode of "The 5 Minute Team Leader" with host Jason Moore, the founder of Teamific, the team and culture building app, we delve into the crucial leadership skill of being future-focused in a rapidly changing world. Discover how neuroscience can help leaders anticipate and prepare for what lies ahead. Our brains are naturally wired to prioritize the present and immediate future, a cognitive bias known as "present bias." Around 27% of people rarely or never think beyond the short term. For leaders, extending their "time span" to think further into the future is vital as they ascend the organizational ladder. It's like shifting gears on the leadership timeline. Neuroscience reveals that the brain struggles to focus on the future when overloaded with daily tasks and tends to prioritize short-term goals. Our act of leadership this week is a practical one. To become better at "Being Future-Focused," start by scheduling dedicated monthly time to map out a "future state" for your team, envisioning where you'd like to be in three to ten years. Work backward to determine the steps needed to reach that destination. Create a recurring agenda item for future-focused discussions in team meetings to empower your team to think ahead collectively. "Being Future-Focused" is a critical leadership skill. By dedicating time to plan for the future and involving your team in forward-thinking discussions, you'll position yourself as a visionary leader capable of navigating tomorrow's challenges. The art and science of being good with people.

In this episode of "The 5 Minute Team Leader," your host Jason Moore - founder of Teamific, the team and culture building app, deep dives into a critical leadership skill: "Being Good with People." Leadership isn't just about managing tasks; it's about effectively leading individuals. Today, we explore the fascinating neuroscience behind balancing processes and people skills. When leaders over-focus on processes, they risk alienating team members, leading to decreased morale, reduced cohesion, and lower motivation. Moreover, this can result in higher turnover rates, decreased productivity, and missed growth opportunities. Neuroscience reveals a seesaw effect in our brains: when one part focuses on goals, the other tends to dial down on people skills. However, leaders who excel in both areas are perceived as great leaders by 72% of those they lead. How to use Rituals to get more juice from values.

In this episode of "The 5 Minute Team Leader," your host Jason Moore delves into the world of rituals and their profound impact on leadership. Rituals go beyond routines; they shape cultures, forge connections, and drive positive behaviors within teams and organizations. Jason explains how rituals differ from values and why they are crucial for leaders. Rituals, as defined, involve specific actions performed in a structured manner, creating shared experiences that become an integral part of a group's identity. They're the "how" behind the "what" of values. Examples include team meetings, check-ins, and checklists. Leaders can harness the power of rituals to set expectations, build trust, and foster positive team culture. One actionable leadership tip is to create a team ritual: * Choose a Team Ritual: Select a recurring activity aligned with your team's values and goals, such as weekly huddles or idea-sharing sessions. * Align with Values: Ensure the ritual reflects your team's values; for instance, promote collaboration through regular idea exchanges. * Empower Team Members: Encourage active participation and input from team members to make the ritual meaningful. * Celebrate and Address: Use the ritual to celebrate achievements, acknowledge contributions, and collectively tackle challenges. In conclusion, rituals bring values to life by defining "how" they are expressed and lived out. By establishing and nurturing meaningful team rituals, leaders can strengthen team culture, enhance unity, and drive positive behaviors, all while aligning with the team's values and objectives. episode Power of a Positive Workplace cover

Power of a Positive Workplace

In this episode we are taking the plunge into the critical role of creating a positive work environment, which is all about boosting team performance and satisfaction. In a leadership role we usually have individual contributor responsibilities to focus on that stops us focusing enough on deliberately cultivating a positive work environment. But when we have a positive work environment, we're better at decision making, we're more likely to collaborate, we're more likely to get on and do the job, and we're more motivated. So, it's not a nice-to-have, it's a cornerstone of high-performing teams. Let's talk about how and what an act of leadership looks like! This is a public episode.
