In this episode of Fueled we talk with Craig Klein of Fischer Kennels and Hunt Club in Albany, MN (http://fischerskennels.com/). We talk about Craig’s early years and what let him down the path of becoming a professional dog trainer. What sets his training program apart and the knowledge he would like people to have prior to getting a puppy or sending a puppy to training. From there we get a little more in-depth into the Chesapeake breed. We talk about what drew him to the breed and the unique characteristics that set the breed apart including some stereotypes that may not be deserved and why the chessie isn’t necessarily the right breed for most. FUELED #17: Canine Arthritis with Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw

In this episode of Fueled Dr. Spoo talks with Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw of the Canine Arthritis Resources and Education or CARE website (https://caninearthritis.org/ [https://caninearthritis.org/]).  Dr. Kirkby Shaw is a small animal surgeon and rehabilitation specialist whose career has focused on bridging the gap between these two disciplines. Kristin received her DVM from the University of Florida (UF) in 2003, followed by a rotating internship at Veterinary Specialists of Northern Colorado, and a small animal surgery residency at the University of Florida. She completed both her MS and Ph.D. at UF. She is past-president of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians and worked as an instructor for the Canine Rehabilitation Institute for many years. In 2018, she was the recipient of the John J. Sherman Award for Excellence in Veterinary Rehabilitation.  Dr. Kirkby Shaw founded CARE in 2018 to provide valuable tools and resources for her clients and veterinary colleagues, as well as those caring for dogs with arthritis around the world. In this episode we discuss her passion for canine arthritis---from what arthritis truly is, how arthritis differs in people and dogs, how to prevent it  and what options exist to treat it beyond non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. I learned a lot in this discussion and will be making some tweaks to my own treatment plans. And while I hope you never have to treat a dog with arthritis, the odds are against you if you own dogs over the course of a lifetime, should your hunting partner be one of the unfortunate I hope this episode helps keep them out in the field. FUELED #15: Russ Kelley - New Premium Performance formulas

On this episode of Fueled we sit back down with one of my favorite guests,  Russ Kelley, the Scientific Services Nutritionist for Royal Canin and Eukanuba. Russ has been a part of the Eukanuba brand going back to 1997 when he joined the team where he was part of important advancements in nutrition related to maternal and puppy nutrition. In this episode we discuss the launch of the new Eukanuba formulas. Dr Spoo and Russ Kelley talk about how these formulas are the culmination of decades of research into canine performance nutrition. These new formulas will rewrite the book on nutrition as we move away from thinking of performance formulas simply as 30/20 formulas and more so designed to meet the needs of the performance work you are doing with your dog. The first episode of fueled with Russ was Episode #3 (https://www.eukanubasportingdog.com/podcast-episode-russ-kelley.html [https://www.eukanubasportingdog.com/podcast-episode-russ-kelley.html]) and is a great one covering a lot of information about overall performance dog nutrition.

episode FUELED #14: Sarah Shull Part 2 - Cruciate Ligament Disease artwork
FUELED #14: Sarah Shull Part 2 - Cruciate Ligament Disease

This episode of Fueled is part 2 of a 2 part discussion on cruciate ligament disease with Dr. Sarah Shull. Dr. Shull is an Assistant Professor in Small Animal Clinical Sciences and the Head of the Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. Her special interests include field dogs and sporting breeds. She trains and competes in field trials and hunt tests with her own Curly-Coated Retrievers and has added some labs to the mix more recently. In addition to competing she occasionally breeds curly-coated retriever litters and is an AKC Field Trial Judge. The idea for these two episodes came from a four-part series of  article that  Dr. Shull recently wrote for The Retriever News (https://www.theretrievernews.com/cruciate-disease-articles.html [https://www.theretrievernews.com/cruciate-disease-articles.html] ) The series is one of the most complete sets of information on the subject currently available. In this episode Drs. Spoo and Shull discuss what surgery looks like, the different options for addressing this condition surgically, rehab post-surgery and non-surgical management.
