Paul’s introductory prayer for the church in Philippi highlights three marks of a church that has begun and remained in Christ: assurance that God completes the work He begins, affection rooted in Christ-centered fellowship, and ongoing growth in godliness through love shaped by truth and discernment. This passage serves as a call to examine our hearts in light of God’s promises, to turn from anything that hinders fellowship with Christ and His church, and to continue steadfastly in Him, trusting His promises, treasuring His people, and seeking His glory. God has given us the ability to plan, and it is wise for us to use it for his purposes for our lives. In humility we receive and submit to God’s purposes. In confidence in the Lord, we make our plans and trust him to accomplish his will. Let’s be good stewards of the ability to make plans for the future. God worked in creation, Christ accomplished the work of salvation on the cross, and the Holy Spirit worked the new birth in our hearts. Now we work unto the Lord for his glory, as an act of praise for his provision, and to meet real needs as we live in this world. This is wisdom for work in Proverbs and in all the Bible. Friendships are common to all people. The gospel makes it possible for us to be the friends of Christ, and it transforms our friendships into relationships that reflect his love in us. Friends in Christ walk with and help each other become more like him. What a friend we have in Jesus, and what friends we are in him.
