Review: Off Campus - Why Consent, Respect, and Trust Are Hot

The week took an unexpected turn for the legions of people enrolling at fictional Briar University to join characters from a series of books written by Elle Kennedy. Her first book, The Deal, is the basis for the eight episodes of Off Campus Season 1, and it made the best of impressions. Upon first glance, the popularity of the series could be disregarded as another romcom or Young Adult novel trope, but anyone paying attention sees past that veneer. What this series does so well, what sets it apart, is how it makes clear the profound desire for consent, respect, and trust from leading men. It also refuses to conform to the usual normalization of competition and cruelty when two people find themselves attracted to the same person. You won't find women tearing each other down or centering men over their connections, instead, they offer support and positivity to each other in every interaction. Serious issues are handled with care and consideration as characters entering adulthood navigate who they want to be in light of how they were raised or what experiences they've had. Overall, the series feels like a big hug for people raised on classic romcoms, with nods to them along the way, but with a welcome fresh take that leaves problematic storylines where they belong, buried within dusty VHS tapes of the past.   All opinions are personal and not representative of any outside company, person, or agenda. It Ends With Us: Part 21 - Betty Brands, Unsealed Texts, and the Settlement Switcheroo

After Blake Lively's team filed to pursue legal action post-settlement, this pod took a turn. It now begins with the continuation of unsealed documents shared in the May 4 drop, but then pivots what Lively's legal team filed and how Justin Baldoni/Wayfarer's legal team just responded. The unsealed May 4 documents include new texts between Blake and Colleen Hoover, Blake and Liz Plank, Blake and Isabella Ferrer, as well as texts from Alex Saks and Ange Gianetti. Each set of texts further illustrates the different grievances and issues each woman had with production and/or Justin Baldoni. On Monday May 4th, the Lively and Baldoni legal teams announced a settlement. After 18 months, and two weeks before jury selection, the highly publicized battle is over - or is it? We review the settlement language and delve into myriad documents from the May 1 drop that I think contributed to the parties finally deciding to drop the issue.
