episode Laken Riley's Final Journal Entry cover

Laken Riley's Final Journal Entry

During the trial of Jose Ibarra, who was found guilty of murdering Laken Riley, her stepfather, John Phillips, read aloud one of her last journal entries in court. The journal entry, dated January 17, 2023, was a heartfelt letter addressed to her 'future husband.' In this entry, Riley expressed her thoughts and feelings about the person she hoped to spend her life with. The reading of this journal entry was a poignant moment in the trial, highlighting the personal and emotional impact of Riley's tragic death on her family and loved ones. The entry was shared as the family pleaded for Ibarra to receive a life sentence without parole[4][5][3]. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. episode Former Teacher Sentenced for Sexual Abuse cover

Former Teacher Sentenced for Sexual Abuse

Melissa Curtis, a former middle school teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, with all but 12 months suspended, for sexually abusing a 14-year-old student in 2015. Curtis, who was 22 years old at the time of the abuse, pleaded guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offense on June 20, 2024. The abuse occurred over several months and took place in various locations, including her car, the school classroom, and her home. The victim, who was in eighth grade and volunteering for an after-school program run by Curtis, reported that he had sexual intercourse with her more than 20 times during this period. Curtis also provided the victim with alcohol and marijuana before engaging in sexual acts. After serving her 12-month prison sentence, Curtis will be on five years of supervised probation and will be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years. She is also prohibited from having unsupervised contact with minors, except for her own children. Curtis taught at Montgomery Village Middle School and Lakelands Park Middle School in Montgomery County Public Schools before leaving the school system in 2017. She was arrested in October 2023 after the victim came forward with the allegations. The investigation and subsequent charges included multiple counts of third and fourth-degree sexual offenses, as well as sexual abuse of a minor. Authorities have encouraged any other potential victims to come forward. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. episode Exotic Dancer Murder and Arrest cover

Exotic Dancer Murder and Arrest

On April 17, 2023, the body of 22-year-old Mercedes Vega, an exotic dancer working in a strip club in Phoenix, Arizona, was found in the backseat of a burning Chevy Malibu on Interstate 10 in Tonopah, approximately 53 miles west of Phoenix. Vega had suffered severe injuries, including blunt force trauma, a gunshot wound to the arm, and was doused in bleach, with bleach also found in her throat. Her body was then burned inside the abandoned car. The night before her body was discovered, Vega had been out with friends near Mill Avenue in Tempe and was last seen entering the garage of her Tempe apartment complex, where her Dodge Charger was parked. Blood was found in the garage, and her Dodge Charger was later found dumped a few miles away. The Chevy Malibu in which her body was found had a salvage title and was not registered to her. After 18 months without any arrests, Sencere Hayes, 22, was taken into custody on November 11, 2024, in Tennessee. Hayes is alleged to have tortured Vega with bleach before her death. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to extradite Hayes back to Arizona, and more arrests are expected to follow. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. episode Laken Riley's Last Texts to Her Mom cover

Laken Riley's Last Texts to Her Mom

On February 22, Georgia nursing student Laken Riley texted and called her mother, Allyson Phillips, as she prepared to go for a run. At 8:55 a.m., Riley sent her last outgoing communication, a text to her mother saying, 'Good morning, about to go for a run'[3]. Riley called her mother at 9:03 a.m. to see if she had time to chat. However, by the time her mother called back about 20 minutes later, Riley had encountered Jose Ibarra on a wooded running trail at the University of Georgia. Prosecutors allege that Ibarra killed Riley after a struggle, with data from her smartwatch indicating her heart stopped beating at 9:28 a.m.[1][4]. Following Riley's failure to respond, her mother sent several texts, initially casual but increasingly concerned. At 9:37 a.m., Phillips texted, 'Call me when you can.' When her calls went unanswered, she texted again at 9:58 a.m., saying, 'You're making me nervous not answering while you're out running. Are you OK?' Another text was sent at 11:47 a.m., reading, 'Please call me. I'm worried sick about you.' These texts were read aloud in court by Georgia police Sgt. Sophie Raboud, who examined data from Riley's phone[1][4]. Ibarra, 26, is charged with murder and other crimes in Riley's death and has pleaded not guilty. The trial, which began on a Friday, includes testimony from multiple witnesses, including law enforcement officers and individuals who knew both Riley and Ibarra. The case has drawn national attention due to Ibarra's immigration status and the subsequent political discussions surrounding border security[1][4]. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Liker at det er både Podcaster (godt utvalg) og lydbøker i samme app, pluss at man kan holde Podcaster og lydbøker atskilt i biblioteket.
