John Henry Newman: A Life Sacrificed – Episode 8

In this final episode of Ida Friederike Görres’s book John Henry Newman: A Life Sacrificed, as well as the Off the Shelf podcast, Fr. Fessio, Vivian Dudro, and Joseph Pierce read some of Newman’s poetry to illustrate his piety discussed in chapter 8. Then, after briefly covering chapter 9, they discuss the last chapter on conscience. Newman distinguishes moral reasoning, which he believes can be flawed from conscience, which he believes is the voice of God. The conscience moves one to love God through obedience.   We would also like to thank our dynamic trio, Father Fessio, Joseph Pearce, and Vivian Dudro for all their hard work and insights into this series. John Henry Newman: A Life Sacrificed – Episode 7

Beginning chapter 7, “Newman Brought Low,” Fr. Fessio, Joseph Pearce, and Vivian Dudro reflect on Newman’s conversion, who is attacked by the English Church and is snubbed by the Catholic Church. They remark about the 45 years of great suffering that Newman had to bear as a result of his conversion, a suffering he bore without becoming bitter. Finally, they discuss Newman’s election to be a cardinal and the vast amount of letters he wrote to others.   SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press: Off the Shelf. John Henry Newman: A Life Sacrificed – Episode 6

Fr. Fessio, Vivian, Dudro, and Joseph Pearce discuss Newman’s original hatred for the Catholic Church, caused by many religious and cultural prejudices. They point out that Newman’s heart began to change when he saw the pastoral and charitable work of the Catholic Church. They also note the tension within Newman, who is both very intellectually honest and has an irrational emotional response to the Church.   SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press: Off the Shelf. John Henry Newman: A Life Sacrificed – Episode 5

Ida Görres remarks that St. John Henry Newman did not like the use of force or coercion to bring people into the Catholic faith. Joseph, Vivian, and Fr. Fessio then discuss whether excommunication and execution are justifiable acts that respect or destroy human freedom. Finally, they quickly review Chapter 5 and debate the merits of Newman’s theory of beauty and architecture. SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press: Off the Shelf. John Henry Newman: A Life Sacrificed – Episode 4

Fr. Fessio, Vivian Dudro, and Joseph Pearce discuss how St. John Henry Newman devoted his whole life to lady truth just as a man is devoted to his wife. They note how Newman encouraged all people to explore the inherent rationality of the faith so that they can become convinced by its logic and intelligibility. With Newman, they point out that while faith is a gift, it is a gift that we can choose not to accept. Finally, they defend Newman against those who try to use his thoughts to argue that doctrines and dogmas change radically over time   SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press: Off the Shelf. Liker at det er både Podcaster (godt utvalg) og lydbøker i samme app, pluss at man kan holde Podcaster og lydbøker atskilt i biblioteket.
Bra app. Oversiktlig og ryddig. MYE bra innhold⭐️⭐️⭐️
