Exploring the mystical connections of head, heart & hand to land through traditional craft with down-to-earth artisan folk. From the forest to the workshop, we explore the creative alchemy of bringing ideas to life through transforming natural elements into a myriad of forms that simplify our life, inspire our heart & nourish our soul. Rooted in Permaculture philosophy, we focus on the revival of natural folk wisdom, resilient design and spiritual craftsmanship applied to tools, garden/farmstead, home/hearth, natural food/drink, goods/textiles, traditional arts & more. Löyly + The Spirit of Sauna Culture

UPDATE: Permaculture Freedom podcast is now called Land by Hand podcast. Listen to the first couple minutes to learn more about this update and the direction the show is headed.  And for the main content of this episode...It's Sauna season and I thought this show might be a great introduction to the cultural traditions of Sauna from the far north of Scandinavia and it's migration to the Upper Midwest of North America. I've put together a beautiful introduction to Sauna from many voices sharing their traditions, stories & folklore. Enjoy! “My sauna cabin is primitive, one step removed from the first excavations in the hillsides of Finland. I wanted it that way for I felt it must be close to the earth, so much a part of the natural environment that simple values would not be lost… Simplicity is the keynote, but when steam rises from the stones and the sprays of steam and give off their fragrance, the sauna comes into its own.” -Sigurd Olson, Runes of the North Learn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here > [https://landbyhand.org/podcast] - - - Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. Haymaking by Hand + Anarchy Acres, Jim Kovaleski, Tap o' Noth Permaculture Farm & more...

It's that time of year to make some hay for the winter so we thought it would be a good idea to get into the weeds of making hay on a small-scale traditionally by hand. This episode is for all the folks who don't have the land or tractor to make hay on a larger scale, but want to mow their lawns, fields or meadows to make hay or bedding for their animals. In this episode, you can learn about different types of grass hay, alfalfa hay & tree hay for nutrients for livestock and of course, the methods of taking up a scythe and learning one of man’s oldest agricultural arts: cutting hay by hand and storing it loose for the winter. Hear from folks like Anarchy Acres, Jim Kovaleski, Tap o' Noth Permaculture Farm & more. Hope you enjoy! "Let us make hay while the sun shines." - Proverb "If I'm honest, the thing I am proudest of is my varieties of wild flowers in the hay meadow." - Monty Don "A Song of the good green grass! A song no more of the city streets; A song of farms - a song of the soil of fields. A song with the smell of sun-dried hay, where the nimble pitchers handle the pitch-fork; A song tasting of new wheat, and of fresh-husk'd maize." - Walt Whitman Learn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here > [https://landbyhand.org/category/podcast-shows/permaculture-freedom/] - - - Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. episode Growing a Holistic Orchard + Michael Phillips artwork
Growing a Holistic Orchard + Michael Phillips

In this episode we are honoring the work & life of Michael Phillips, the 'beyond-organic' holistic orchardist, teacher, writer & consultant, who recently passed away. The audio in this episode is from the "Successful Biological Orcharding" workshop Michael facilitated in an organic apple orchard grown by Pat Tompkins. There is much wisdom to learn from Michael's lifelong legacy connecting with the biological world. To support Michael's work and his family, visit their memorial page here > [https://lostnationorchard.com/memoriam.php] Thank you! We hope you enjoy the nutrient-dense biological wisdom Michael has to share! As above, so below. As below, so above. A diverse plant community bound by an array of mycorrhizal fungal species will form a 'common root being' throughout the orchard. The trees produce healthy fruit in accord with how we revere this sacred soil partnership. - Michael Phillips Learn more about this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here > [https://landbyhand.org/category/podcast-shows/permaculture-freedom/] Growing 'organic' has always been a given. Understanding how Nature does health fascinates me to no end. Working with biology and nutrition produces flavorful apples that are good for us. Compare that to the visually-pleasing orbs produced by toxic chemistry. That I choose not to certify our farm as organic with the USDA makes for good discussion over a glass of cider. Check out my network grower profile [http://groworganicapples.com/profile.php?pid=160] to better understand what a holistic orchardist does to bless up this earth. - Michael Phillips Michael Phillips was a farmer, writer, carpenter, orchard consultant, and speaker. He lived with his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Grace, on Heartsong Farm in northern New Hampshire, growing apples and a variety of medicinal herbs. Michael is the author of Mycorrhizal Planet, The Apple Grower (Chelsea Green, 2005) and The Holistic Orchard (2011), and teamed up with Nancy to write The Herbalist’s Way (2005). His Lost Nation Orchard is part of the Holistic Orchard Network, and Michael also led the community orchard movement. Learn more at Grow Organic Apples > [https://www.GrowOrganicApples.com.] (bio from Chelsea Green Publishing) People know in their hearts that our food can be good for us. That how that food is grown matters. That the people growing that food need to be  supported. That local is indeed the answer. - Michael Phillips - - - Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find. episode Maple Syrup + Tapping into the Spirit of the North artwork
Maple Syrup + Tapping into the Spirit of the North

Springtime in the Northwoods is a beautiful time of year when the natural world begins waking up from a long winter hibernation. We all have these natural rhythms within us as well that are intimately connected to the place we call home. For us in the North, this is a special time when we can tap into this much needed flow of life by literally tapping into the sap flow of Maple trees here at our farmstead. We also love savoring this sap fresh before heating & evaporating it into Maple Syrup. It is like drinking slightly sweetened water that is incredibly refreshing and also has trace minerals, antioxidants & a natural form of sugar. Learn more about this tradition from several voices speaking about the spirit of making Maple Syrup.  ...the truth is that the earth endows us with great gifts, the other half is that the gift is not enough. The responsibility does not lie with the maples alone. The other half belongs to us; we participate in its transformation. It is our work, and our gratitude, that distills the sweetness. - Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass Learn more about the inspiring folks from this episode, watch the videos and read the show notes on this episode here > [https://landbyhand.org/category/podcast-shows/permaculture-freedom/] - - - Disclaimer: This is another episode exploring different themes in Permaculture and related fields with audio clips, interviews & anything else we can find.
