Whistling in the Dark Audiobook by Shirley Hughes

Title: Whistling in the Dark Author: Shirley Hughes Narrator: Charlotte Cole Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 34 mins Language: English Release date: 11-14-17 Publisher: Candlewick on Brilliance Audio Genres: Teens, Fiction & Literature Publisher's Summary: Legendary author Shirley Hughes draws on her young teenage memories for a compelling novel of friendship and mysteries set in Liverpool during the Blitz. Liverpool, 1940: Thirteen-year-old Joan's home is under constant threat from the Nazi's terrifying nightly air raids. Everyone is on edge, faced with strict food rationing, curfews, and blackouts. It's not an easy time to be a teenager. Joan's one solace is going to the movies with her best friend, the unflappable Doreen, but when the bombings intensify, even that becomes too dangerous. There's also the matter of a strange man who Joan sees lurking near their home. Who is he, and why does he think Joan can help him? Even more unsettling, as the Blitz worsens, Joan and her friends make a discovery down by the old mill that will tear the whole community apart. In the hardship of war, everything seems to be rationed - except true friendship. Members Reviews: Phenomenal details of everyday life Joan is a young teen living in Liverpool, England in 1941. The Germans seem to bomb sections of the city every night, and the other privations of war time are part of every day life. Joan's father, a wireless operator on an oil tanker, was killed when Joan was very young, but the family has gone on without him. Older sister Audrey is dating Dai, a young man in the service, brother Brian is helpful but somewhat annoying, and younger sister Judy needs a lot of care. Joan's mother is dating an "oily" soldier who is in charge of providing food for the local soldiers. Joan goes on lots of adventures with her friend Doreen, whose father is fairly well-to-do and well connected. When a Polish refugee, Ania, joins Joan's school, some of the other students are not particularly kind. When a mysterious man who has been hanging around Joan's neighborhood identifies himself, Joan's family gets pulled into some intrigue involving him, and there is also some black marketeering being run by some surprising individuals. Ms. Hughes was born in 1927, so she is able to include many details of this time period that people who had not lived through it would never know. Audrey attempting to use gravy brown for leg makeup was a detail that blew me away! While I am not a huge fan of "home front" stories, there is a 7th grade unit on historical fiction from 1940-1980, and this will be perfect for that. Also, Liverpool is one of my favorite cities (and somewhere I don't get lost easily), and I've been enjoying some of the BBC period dramas such as Home Fires and My Mother and Other Strangers, so I will definitely be recommending this. This is a bit light on plot, but the details of daily life more than make up for it. Hughes does a good job of showing that war is horrible, but often somehow boring. It's not a thought that young readers might have, but is an important one to consider. Whistling in the Dark is a great choice for readers who need to read a book about WWII and aren't quite up to the horrors of fighting or Holocaust camps.Hughes' Hero on a Bicycle does very well in my library, so I'm glad to purchase this one. I will also be looking into Ms. Hughes' work-- she seems much more well known in the UK.

episode House of Ash Audiobook by Hope Cook cover

House of Ash Audiobook by Hope Cook

Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: House of Ash Author: Hope Cook Narrator: Aaron Abano, Charlotte Wright Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 1 min Language: English Release date: 10-03-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Teens, Fiction & Literature Publisher's Summary: After hearing voices among an eerie copse of trees in the woods, 17-year-old Curtis must confront his worst fear: that he has inherited his father's mental illness. A desperate search for answers leads him to discover Gravenhearst, a labyrinth mansion that burned down in 1894. When he locks eyes with a steely Victorian girl in a forgotten mirror, he's sure she's one of the fire's victims. If he can unravel the mystery, he can save his sanity...and possibly the girl who haunts his dreams. But more than 100 years in the past, the girl in the mirror is fighting her own battles. When her mother disappears and her sinister stepfather reveals his true intentions, Mila and her sister fight to escape Gravenhearst and unravel the house's secrets - before it devours them both. Members Reviews: The Perfect Haunting Book This is pretty well a perfect haunted house book. It's not at all your typical haunting, it gives a really cool twist and atmosphere. Super original in that it's dual point of view from a current boy and a Victorian girl, and you love them both, as well as the boy's best friend. I understood why his life was tortured, very realistic story within the story, and why he felt such responsibility to his sister, and I understood his choices because of the life he was forced to live. At times beautifully poetic, never overdone, and not eerie just to be eerie--it's a story first, a scary story after. I love it. the twining narrative between them unravels at a perfect pace. For lovers of beautiful prose This isn't just a horror story. And while it isn't entirely about hauntings, either, there are many. From people to objects to the eponymous house, ghosts abound. Curtis and Mila are evenly matched and burdened, and once they meet, the twining narrative between them unravels at a perfect pace. For lovers of beautiful prose, imagery, and symbolism, you'll find a feast here. For those who love a true dash of Victorian Gothic in their stories, there is plenty in both Mila's timeline and Curtis's points of view. However... The thing I like most about this book is that it hooks its tenterhooks into your heartmeats, digs in, and refuses to relent. There is a deep emotional truth to Cook's writing that is vivid and searing, and that particular quality is why she is an auto-buy author for me from now on. Truly a writer to keep your eyes on. Beautiful writing and amazing themes So spooky I could only read during the day but SUCH a page turner. Very satisfying! Beautiful writing and amazing themes. Love the characters. What A Thrill Ride! I received this for review through Amulet Books and NetGalley. Thanks to them for letting me review an early copy. Looking at the cover, I was expecting a middle grade, haunted house story, but I was so, so wrong. First off, it's YA, and it deals with some heavy topics. I think the cover doesn't do it justice for what a crazy ride this is. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice cover, but it's not scary enough for what's inside this book. THIS BOOK WAS INTENSE!!! I was hooked from page one. I enjoyed having Mila's chapters and Curtis's chapters. I liked how there were two different time periods that were so connected, and happening simultaneously. The mystery was really interesting too.

Members Reviews: Fun, Clean YA Romance I give this book more like *3.5 Stars* rounded up. I enjoyed the story and feel that the author is a good story teller. This was my first by this author and it was a good first impression. I will read more by her. I felt like the two main characters were very mature for their 16 and 17 years on this planet. The story was kind of slow to start but after it picked up speed I didn't want to put it down. There were times, mostly in the beginning that I felt like there were too many unnecessary details either about the setting or the characters in general. I also felt like the ending was a bit abrupt and left me as a reader hanging. There were a lot of lose ends concerning Ellie's dad and some other things. This might be the author's style but I hope not because it feels like a let down when a lot of things aren't resolved. I'm hoping there is a sequel or something in the works. There was romance but it was subtle and I think that is appropriate for the age level this novel is marketed for. It is a clean book. I think it was because the way they interacted and spoke to each other made it seem like they were much older Cute story. I was a little turned off by the age of the kids. I think it was because the way they interacted and spoke to each other made it seem like they were much older. I don't know how much this book would appeal to a teenager since it is so unrealistic. I skimmed through a lot of pages. Many scenes were drawn out and boring. The overall story was cute and I wish it didn't end where it did. [Review] This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith So last week a read a really depressing book. I mean that book broke my heart into little pieces. I needed something up beat, something that was going to make me smile and put me back together. I swear Amazon knows me, they must have my brain hot wired because that morning I was almost done with â Sad Bookâ, They make This Is What Happy Looks Like their kindle deal of the day. $1.99 is definitely a sign I'd say, so I bought it and started it right when I put the other down. This was the perfect follow up.

The audiobook is narrated by the famous Russian actress Liya Akhedzhakova. Please note: this audiobook is in Russian. ©2010 Vimbo (P)2016 Vimbo Members Reviews: Great Bedtime Reader All of the Illustrated Chosen Classics are great bedtime readers. My wife sits in the hall of the children's bedrooms and reads these stories to them at bedtime. The difference between these books and the traditional novels is that these stories move very fast. My son, in particular, will hear one of these abridged classic novels and, if he likes it, will then read the full unabridged version on his own. Kind of gives our kids a taste of the classics without having to start reading a really large and sometimes overwhelming looking book. My son is 10 and my daughter is 15. We have about 30 of these types of books in our library. A Classic Still Like many people of my age (62), I read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a child because at that time it was widely perceived to be a child's or young adult's book. This is unfortunate as it is not nor has it ever been directed at the young. In my rereading I discovered for the first time why it is still called the original great American novel. Huckleberry, like Twain, is opinionated and perceptive. His narration and point of view drive the novel forward. Rather than relegate this work to the children's shelves or castigate it as racist, folks should embrace this novel for what it is, a bildungsroman that shows the growth of a country as well as the growth of its young protagonist. It captivated a classroom full of surly teens I teach English, and the junior year in North Carolina is devoted to American literature. I approached Huck Finn with no small amount of trepidation because of Twain's use of vernacular. I ran into the same problem with "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and solved that by listening to Ruby Dee's audio recording, which students loved. I purchased this recording of Huck Finn, and it was to die for fabulous. Students read along in their books as we listened to the recording, and it helped bring the characters and the story alive for them. They laughed when I hoped they would laugh, and they understood the novel so much better by being able to listen to it. This recording was invaluable. Reading this book as an adult is a whole different ... Reading this book as an adult is a whole different experience. I'm fairly sure the versions I read as a child were watered down. I don't have any memory of murder and mayhem in the versions I read as a child. All the same it was highly entertaining and deserving of being a classic. Friendship and mischieviousness. I grew up reading this book, a story about Huckleberry Finn and his adventurous life on the Mississippi River as a boy. He would be considered a hoodlum in this day and age, at the time it was written he was an orphan and had no one to help him grow with morals however he is a rather a good boy with pretty good morals and this story is a classic. The story is also about friendship.
