Episode 5 - What is Grandparent Alienation and why is it a growing problem?

What did you think about our podcast? [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2354013/fan_mail/new] There is another group of people suffering in silence from alienation.  More and more grandparents say they are being alienated from their grandchildren — prevented from seeing or having a meaningful relationship with their grandchildren. ‘Canadian Difference Makers in Grandparent Alienation’ is a new organization that aims to raise awareness about grandparent alienation, which a growing number of researchers and mental health professionals are calling a silent epidemic.  In the UK for example, the Gransnet Organization reports that 1 in 7 grandparents are estranged from their grandkids. If applied to Canada, this ratio suggests more than 750-thousand  grandparents in Canada are alienated from their grandkids. And, it’s believed that this devastating trend is increasing. For more information, check out the Canadian Difference Makers in Grandparent Alienation website: https://cdndifferencemakersga.weebly.com/ [https://cdndifferencemakersga.weebly.com/] In this episode, we speak with three grandparents who are being prevented from seeing their grandchildren. We learn the different ways this form of alienation can happen, and how painful alienation is for grandparents. Episode 4 - Meet Priya, a targeted parent for 10 years

What did you think about our podcast? [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2354013/fan_mail/new] Priya has not had a relationship with her son for 10 years, despite being his primary and loving caregiver for all of his childhood. She describes how it happened, how the other parent went from not being overly interested in their child to alienating him from his mother while she was undergoing cancer treatment. She also describes the role the grandmother played in the alienation. Priya shares her understandings of this painful situation, how hard it is to share this information with others, and how meeting Jacqueline helped her to understand that she is not alone in being alienated from a precious child. ------------------ Thank you for listening to the podcast Navigating Parental Alienation! Episode 3 - How TRUST strengthens the parent-child bond & teaches honesty, with Prof Kang Lee

What did you think about our podcast? [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2354013/fan_mail/new] How can a parent who is alienated from their children strengthen the BOND they have with those children? By letting the kids know they TRUST them.  Kids want to be trusted. They are wired to respond to trust. Being trusted makes them feel good about themselves, and about the person who trusts them. Trust strengthens their BOND with the parent who trusts them. And -- children as young as 12 months start figuring out who they CAN and who they CAN'T TRUST. That is what Professor Kang Lee, an expert in the study of lying and cheating, and his colleagues found after extensive research.  He says using positive reinforcement like TRUST — instead of negative reinforcement , like threats - encourages kids to be honest, and  cooperate. And more importantly, it develops a bond between parents and their children. Prof. Lee is a global expert on the topic of deception, and has studied lying and cheating for the past 30 years. He is in the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. He is the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Moral Development and Developmental Neuroscience.    He says the trend of “helicopter parenting” so common among  alienating parents, actually tells children they are not trusted and they lose self-efficacy.  Finally, hear what he says about whether people can ever accurately tell when a person is lying to us……and that includes if JUDGES are able to detect when someone is lying to them. This is critical information for alienated parents who turn to the justice system for help. ------------------ Thank you for listening to the podcast Navigating Parental Alienation! Episode 2 - Is the alienating parent a narcissist?

What did you think about our podcast? [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2354013/fan_mail/new] Many Parental Alienation experts say that parents who alienate a child or children from their other parent often have a personality disorder, such as narcissistic personality disorder or NPD. In this episode, Jacqueline introduces us to Charlotte, a mother who was raised by a narcissistic parent and then found herself in a relationship with a narcissistic partner who tried to alienate her from their children.    Jacqueline and Charlotte discuss the classic behaviors of narcissists, the red flags that often get ignored in the early stages of a relationship with a narcissist, how narcissists typically seek out empathic and emotionally strong partners, and how narcissists will always behave unreasonably with their partners to maintain control in the relationship. The constant disequilibrium and drama means the narcissist’s target cannot take care of their own needs but is always working to appease the narcissist and lower the drama.  As Charlotte explains, being partners with a narcissist is like a firefighter being married to an arsonist – while you’re putting out the sofa, they are setting fire to the drapes. And they will constantly create problems that are unsolvable to wear you down completely to the point where you cannot even take care of yourself. Charlotte reminds us that we must pay attention to how others make us feel, and if they make us feel badly about ourselves, that is someone to avoid. ------------------ Thank you for listening to the podcast Navigating Parental Alienation!
