US Bankruptcy Judge Elizabeth Gunn joins Navigating Receiverships to talk through some unique receiverships appointed by the District of Columbia that make their way into her courtroom.  Judge Gunn is our first Judge to join us, but she is no stranger to podcasts as she hosts The Bad Boys of Bankruptcy [https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/to-the-extent-that/id1498999428] for the American Bar Association Business Law Section.   About Judge Gunn The Honorable Elizabeth L. Gunn has served as a United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Columbia since 2020.  A COVID-era selection and appointment, she was sworn in by Zoom from her living room.  A frequent speaker and author on bankruptcy topics, Judge Gunn brings a unique perspective to her presentations not only as the only bankruptcy judge in both the District of Columbia and the D.C. Circuit, but also from her service as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia Division of Child Support Enforcement.   In 2017, Judge Gunn was recognized by the American Bankruptcy Institute as a member of its inaugural class of 40 Under 40.  Judge Gunn also serves as an Associate Editor for the American Bankruptcy Law Journal and a Coordinating and Associate Editor of the American Bankruptcy Institute Law Review. Judge Gunn sits on the boards of the Federal Bar Association Bankruptcy Section, International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation, American Bar Association National Conference of Federal Trial Judges, the Chesapeake Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association, and is the host of the popular American Bar Association Business Law Section Podcast “Bad Boys of Bankruptcy.” She is a member of the Walter Chandler Bankruptcy Inn of Court and is Board Certified in Consumer Law by the American Board of Certification. Scott Moskol of Blank Rome joins the Navigating Receiverships podcast to discuss his experience in the budding market of a cannabis receivership. About Scott Scott Moskol has developed a national platform representing and counseling clients with respect to all legal issues that may arise in restructurings, workouts, bankruptcies, receiverships, and other insolvency-related matters including distressed mergers and acquisitions (“M&A”). Scott’s practice also consists of advising clients with respect to the purchase and/or sale of distressed assets, companies, and loan portfolios. He also represents clients with respect to financings and lending transactions, as well as general corporate matters, sometimes serving as outside general counsel. Since 2013, Scott has established himself as a leading cannabis industry attorney, building a nationwide client base that includes investors, lenders, cultivation and dispensary operators, investment funds, and family offices. His cannabis practice spans the full spectrum of legal services in this rapidly evolving sector, including capital raises, mergers and acquisitions, investment vehicle structuring, regulatory compliance, and general business counsel. Scott has extensive experience in cannabis industry transactions ranging from multimillion-dollar institutional lending facilities and complex business combinations to equity financings and asset acquisitions. His deep knowledge also extends to cannabis industry insolvencies and restructurings, including pioneering receivership work in this emerging area of law. He regularly advises clients on regulatory matters, including compliance with evolving state cannabis laws and emerging psychedelics legislation. Prior to joining his previous firm, he served as vice president, senior asset manager, and counsel for Capital Crossing, a division of Lehman Brothers Bank, FSB/Capital Crossing Servicing Company, LLC. He also managed all outstanding legal matters and cases for the nonperforming loans in the portfolio, which included assessing risk and cost of various options, and negotiating, resolving and restructuring the loans. His areas of expertise include advising financial institutions and lenders regarding secured transactions, lending in regulated industries, developing compliance and underwriting protocols, Treasury and FinCEN compliance (inclusive of KYC, AML and BSA) and managing of distressed loan facilities. Mr. Ormond has tried cases in State Court, Federal Court and Bankruptcy Court and he has arbitrated dozens of matters. Mr. Ormond also served as President of the California Receivers Forum and is the former Chair of the Remedies Division of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.  Mr. Ormond also teaches Continuing Legal Education courses on lending, receivership law, regulated industries and securitization of assets. In 2018 Mr. Ormond was nominated for the prestigious “Leader in Law” award by the Los Angeles Business Journal and he was previously selected as one of “Los Angeles’ Top 100 Lawyers.”  He is repeatedly recognized as a “Super Lawyer” and he was recently selected as one of the “Top Cannabis Law Experts in the United States” by Databird Research Journal.
