Episode 33! Coffee Cup Reading as Feminist Practice w/Zeynep Korkman

Zeynep Korkman tells us about her research on divination cafes in Turkey and we really get into coffee cup readings - what they mean, what they offer, how we love them and also how we have sometimes not loved them. Coffee cup reading is a feminine practice - and more, it also has potentials of being a feminist practice - "feminist visioning work" as Korman describes it in her beautiful book Gendered Fortunes (Duke University Press, 2023). This time we discuss the political realities of education and scholarship in Armenia and beyond: academic freedom, censorship, and state control over intellectuals and ideas. This conversation comes at a time when there has been heightened focus in Armenia as well as all over the Diaspora on these questions as we just witnessed Dr. Edita Gzoyan, the Director of the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute in Armenia, terminated from her position and a groundswell of support from inside and outside of the institute condemn this termination that came just after U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance's visit to Armenia. Dr. Gzoyan's termination was reportedly ordered by Prime Minister Pashinyan. Our discussion takes up many adjacent topics, including the question of hope and resistance in the academy and beyond.

Episode 29! WHAT DO YOU WANT? Postsocialism and the Political Horizon

What is it that drives postsocialist grassroots politics, especially in Armenia and the larger South Caucasus? In this episode Milena and Tamar discuss the political horizon (or lack thereof) that has set in since liberalism, neoliberalism, and the general postsocialist condition. We consider the critical questions of colonialism, imperialism, socialism, the women's movement, military bases, Russia, the West, and what all of this has to do with imagining a future. The general question we ponder is WHAT DO YOU WANT? or WHAT DO WE WANT?
