I thought I had been hired for me." (11:30) Keileigh [°2001 - Tennessee]: "What is the best way to phrase this... I am younger in the creative field. I look up to my elders in arts administration, I admire them, I want to be like them. But then, they don't even say 'hi' to you when you are ushering." (15:37) Preeti [°1973 - India]: "My mother didn't get to have a career. But she has one now, in art. Her medium is what comes from domestic work, which she was made to do when she was young. I also took her for granted as a servant. She had so much more to say, that I was missing. It didn't end there." (21:04) What do you deserve? A powerful life - to take up space - dignity - to be able to do it all. "All comments were spot on. That's what we deserve." I assimmilated to the story he had of me." (07:10) Clara [°1994 - Stanford, Connecticut, USA]: “I am infantilized often. It kind of made me bitter over time. But there is a Haitian proverb: 'you will meet the man, or you'll meet your maker.'" (11:53) Danre Adekunle [°Ibadan, Nigeria]: “I am an eldest immigrant daughter, my parents defer decision making to me. My brother is soaring right now. I flew down to Atlanta each month to make sure he is in a good place, 24 flights in 12 months." (15:32) Anne [°1989 - Brazil]: "My mother didn't get to have a career. But she has one now, in art. Being a young woman, feeling I have the future of feminism on my back... people don't realise how hard it is. What am I going to do with my future? How am I going to make this right?" (27:00) What do you deserve? A chain of 10 answers, with a gender shift in the middle after "for one single man to come up here and tell us what they deserve." They didn't want to hire me, president Nixon had just signed an affirmative action act, every company had to hire one woman. We all got fired." (12:40) Raven [°2007 - Rumford, Maine, USA]: “When I was a kid I used to feel excluded a lot within my family. They liked my brother more, the things he liked more. I was just someone who was there sometimes." (16:26) Kalliope [°2006 - Iowa, USA]: “I was dating a guy who ended up being my manager. I got in trouble for getting my breaks at the same time as his. There is this balance of when saying 'no' or 'yes' is bad, growing up as a woman. When can I say 'no' or 'yes' and what is going to get me through this world?" (19:45) Sarah [°1988 - Michigan, USA]: "It's easy to say in your twenties 'I don't want kids'. But as you see the biological opportunity really running out, you realise: 'I don't have a roadmap.'" I can't afford children, and I work in theater.
