One of our core essential understandings is that the brain is malleable. Knowing that the brain is continually making new connections, creating new neurons, pruning away the unused, a TON in the early childhood and adolescence years, it makes me challenge the idea of learning styles. (Covers eyes and peeks through fingers...lol) This may be an unpopular opinion, but I have my reasons, hear me out. I know you may be thinking the last episode was about courage, isn't that the same thing as confidence? NOPE! While courage is more about the outward outcome and action, confidence is more about the inner work to need to get to that point. > "It is confidence in our bodies, minds, and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures." -Oprah Winfrey I was listening to a panel on a virtual conference, and the panelist mentioned a definition of confidence that had a significant difference from what I thought confidence to mean. When I think about confidence, I automatically couple it with a fearless attitude. I think of a lion or lioness hunting with full confidence that they will catch their prey type of energy. The panelist mentioned a definition that had a subtle beauty that I believe highlights a gentleness that is often missing when we raise our kids. Listen in and head over to the blog post to learn more about the definition of confident that gets the short end of the stick. Would that child in your classroom that says they want to be a teacher when they get older still want to be a teacher after they have had you as their teacher? I once said on a panel discussion that "teaching can be just as lucrative and progressive as any other career… doctor, lawyer, businessman or woman on Wall Street." The ballroom of educators gasped then took the ride with me. We see our work at Revolve Learning as a way to lift teachers in historically marginalized communities out of the poor profession mindset and into seeing the profession of teaching as a fruitful, meaningful, and impactful career where we move the needle of social justice, empowerment, and advocacy. We still need the kids to say, "I want to be a teacher when I grow up." There is no better place for children to learn than from teachers who love what they do and see their impact on their children's lives. There is so much going on in our world. It seems as if a light bulb has turned on for many people, a reckoning of sorts. The core of this podcast is for the empowerment of people to lean in with the opportunity they have to be an agent and a catalyst for changing the lives of people for generations to come. This support has to be in every way, not just when it is convenient for us. That is going to require a large helping of courage. > Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. -Anais Nin The catalyst for that movement of shrinking or expanding is the people around you and the relationships that you have with them over time. The act and ability to choose to push through fear to participate in an experience fully is a skill that we must learn how to get back. That's courage! Courage is defined as the ability to do something that frightens one. Check out all the resources at www.revolvelearning.com [https://anchor.fm/dashboard/episode/ebb4f6/metadata/revolvelearning.com]! Have you ever heard someone say, "That's not my job?" Maybe you have said it at one point in your career. I know I have been there. This episode takes a close look at THREE (plus a bonus…wink) things that are your job if you take on the great RESPONSIBILITY to educate children at any grade level. We are sensitive to the times we are in right now but want to be responsive and attuned to the needs of our students, which are guaranteed to return to school with a wide variety of new and potentially adverse experiences from home. With the reality of education changing before our eyes after a global pandemic, now more than ever, we need to reset our mindset to be clear about the power that is within our control. You STILL have the power to make a meaningful impact on your students by building relationships, empowering change, and impacting the environments in your classroom (virtual or in-person) and throughout the school. If you are still committed to being a teacher, listen in, take notes, reflect on your mindset, and remember your purpose for being an educator. Come back stronger than ever with the tools that make sense for the times.
