The Tree Analogy To better illustrate the philosophy of functional medicine, I use a tree as a metaphor. The roots of the tree represent foundational lifestyle factors, such as nutrition, sleep, and stress management, which nourish overall health. Just as a tree’s health is determined by its roots, a person’s well-being is influenced by their lifestyle choices. The trunk of the tree symbolizes the core structures of the body, including the immune, digestive, and hormonal systems. These systems work together to maintain balance and health.
