S2E5: The Power of Creativity, Community, and the TikTok Algorithm? w/ Carl Philip Dybwad

Welcome to Terra.talk, the official podcast of international climate school Terra.do. [https://www.terra.do/climate-fellowship-learning-for-action/?cdc=terratalk] We're wrapping up Season 2 with a nod to the young guns driving climate literacy and action forward in every corner of the world. Carl Philip Dybwad is the COO of Climate Cardinals, one of the largest (if not the largest) youth-led climate education groups in the world. He's a climate strategist, designer, and researcher from Norway, and his work covers multilateral policy, corporate strategy, and design for impact, driven by the belief that creativity, combined with climate science and innovation, can lead to transformative solutions. He holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Management from the Yale School of the Environment and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Sciences Po Paris. In the international policy arena, Carl was a Norwegian Youth Delegate to Pre-COP26 and an observer for Action SolidaritĂ© Tiers Monde at COP26, where he advocated for loss and damage funding for the Global South from Nordic countries. He was previously Director of Impact at JUV Consulting (now part of UTA), where he developed sustainability strategies for major brands including IKEA, Procter & Gamble, and VF Europe. Beyond his work, he finds inspiration in design, architecture, and Arctic hikes. S2E4: Designing Hydropower Turbines for the Fishies w/ Natel Energy's Johannes Santen and Sterling Watson

Welcome to Terra.talk, the official podcast of international climate school Terra.do. [https://www.terra.do/climate-fellowship-learning-for-action/?cdc=terratalk] For the first time, we hosted a guest duo on the pod! Johannes Santen and Sterling Watson are two engineers at Natel Energy, a hydropower company whose FishSafeℱ turbine designs protect fish from injury as they pass downstream through the turbine and get whacked around by its blades. We navigate the worlds of balancing biodiversity protection with clean energy generation, finding your place in the engineering world, and mechanically rethinking the cutting edge of hydropower - figuratively and literally (thank you Sterling for the joke). Johannes is a Principal Mechanical Engineer at Natel, where he's worked for seven years designing FishSafe hydro turbines. He also builds automation and optimization tools for the team's design and simulation processes, drawing on his background in mechanical engineering and control systems. Previously, he played a key role in designing and commissioning Natel's field-installed turbines and auxiliary equipment. Prior to Natel, he spent five years at a startup developing a high-compression ratio, liquid-tolerant compressor, taking the technology from concept to field operation. Johannes holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Sterling Watson leads experimental and modeling work at Natel Energy to quantify the effects of turbine passage on fish that encounter hydropower facilities, and inform safer, high-performance designs. In 2024, Sterling received the inaugural Rising Star Award from the National Hydropower Association in recognition of her achievement and leadership as an early-career professional in the water power industry.Sterling holds bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT. Her passion for everything aquatic extends beyond the office and she can be found swimming, surfing, and sea foraging in the waters of San Francisco during her free time. S2E3: The Art of Investing Climate Smart w/ James Regulinski

Welcome to Terra.talk, the official podcast of international climate school Terra.do. [https://www.terra.do/climate-fellowship-learning-for-action/?cdc=terratalk] This episode lodges itself somewhere between a financial explainer and a philosophy discussion, as James Regulinski guides Jae through a winding, intricate discussion of climate-forward personal finance and the foundational philosophies about Earth, life, and our natural resources that guide it all. James Regulinski is the co-founder of Carbon Collective, a groundbreaking investment platform providing low-fee, diversified portfolios built to help solve climate change and that helps companies build 401ks with climate-focused options. At Carbon Collective, James leads product development and technology as well as being CCO, ensuring that individuals and organizations can invest in ways that align with their sustainability values. In this capacity, he has worked with mission-driven companies like Terra.do to implement climate-aligned 401(k) retirement plans for employees, exemplifying how corporate benefits can advance environmental goals. Carbon Collective’s mission is to close the multi-trillion-dollar climate investment gap by divesting from fossil fuels and reinvesting in climate solutions, making James a key player in the push to green the finance industry. James’s career spans several climate-focused initiatives. Prior to founding Carbon Collective in 2020, he teamed up with his eventual co-founder Zach Stein at Osmo Systems, where they developed a low-cost water-quality sensor platform for sustainable aquaculture. Under James’s technical leadership as CTO, Osmo Systems raised over $4 million to commercialize this innovation, which won Imagine H2O’s 2018 prize for water tech innovation. James began his journey in climate solutions even earlier at ALL Power Labs, engineering biomass gasifiers that converted agricultural waste into renewable electricity while producing biochar to sequester carbon.  He credits a unique childhood for sparking his commitment to the planet: as a child, he spent five years sailing around the world with his family, witnessing firsthand the negative impacts of human activity on the natural environment. This early global perspective instilled in him a drive to fight climate change through actionable solutions.  Through his work with Carbon Collective and partnerships with organizations like Terra.do, James continues to bridge the gap between finance and climate action, empowering others to invest in a sustainable future. S2E2: From East Asian Journalism to Climate Communications: Terra.talk x Climate Swings w/ Michael Ethan Gold

Welcome to Terra.talk, the official podcast of international climate school Terra.do. [https://www.terra.do/climate-fellowship-learning-for-action/?cdc=terratalk] This episode is a break from the usual Terra.talk formula, as Jae goes on a deep, winding conversation on the mechanics of climate communications, GenAI, and the role of business in journalism and storytelling with Michael Ethan Gold, host of the Climate Swings Podcast and full-time climate comms consultant. Michael Gold is a communications strategist and writer with more than fifteen years of experience shaping human-centered climate and sustainability narratives. As Founder of Word Clouds Consulting, he helps multilateral institutions, investors, and innovators translate complex climate, finance, and technology themes—including the emerging role of AI—into compelling stories that drive action. Based between Barcelona and San Francisco, Michael has advised organizations such as Methane Guiding Principles, Emerald Technology Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and the Climate Policy Initiative, building narrative frameworks that connect data, policy, and human impact. Before founding Word Clouds, Michael served as managing editor at The Economist Intelligence Unit (now Economist Impact), where he led global research and thought-leadership projects spanning sustainability, technology for good, and inclusive growth. His editorial career began in Asia as a Reuters correspondent in Taiwan and cultural reporter in Beijing, experiences that honed his ability to find nuance and humanity in complex, rapidly evolving systems. Today, he applies that same journalistic precision to helping clients and collaborators craft stories that resonate across business, policy, and the public sphere. Michael also produces and hosts Climate Swings, a narrative-driven podcast spotlighting global climate innovators and the personal journeys behind their work. A Yale graduate in anthropology and a Terra.do fellow (shout out to the Quokkas!), he brings a cross-cultural, research-driven perspective to the art of sustainability communication. Fluent in Mandarin and conversant in Spanish, he bridges regions and disciplines to help shape the stories of a net-zero future.
