"Rank F*****g Amateurs! But good dudes...." Al Davis (probably, if he ever met us....)The world is awash with podcasts dedicated to the “1% of the 1%” that made or make their fame and fortune through sports. This is not one of those podcasts.Best known as non-professional American Football coaches, Nick Rockell and British American Football Hall of Fame Coach Mark Moss are absolute amateurs in in podcasting but always willing to try new things.Join the long-time friends as they dig into the 99% of people that don’t get to rise to the publicly visible top of sports regardless of their time and sacrifice.Maybe it’s a minority sport, they just aren’t good enough, tragedy came their way, or opportunities just haven’t materialised - the coaches find those that have achieved “success” in sport while living as regular Jimmy's and Jo's, talking about what sport means to them and its affect on their life and career. In Season 1 the coaches revisit a period in their own coaching lives that makes them immensely proud - their combined13 years leading the London Blitz American Football program from 2003 through 2015 - talking to some of the standout players from teams in that era who have also gone on to stand out in their non-sport career.Authentic (untrained), real (excuse us for that), and sometimes not for the faint-hearted (or impatient), we hope you enjoy this look at the genuine stories of the more conventional sports population.Music by bassmanguk (top man!) Jimmy's & Jo's Podcast - A Coaches Corner Episode

Music by bassmanguk (top man!) Show Notes - A Coaches Corner Episode Episode Summary: In this episode Nick and Mark reflect on the conversations recorded so far and the themes that keep emerging. They discuss the lasting influence of PE teachers and mentors, the decline of school sport, rising costs in youth athletics, and what happens when kids lose access to play, relationships, and real-world interaction. The conversation also dives into modern coaching — fundamentals vs schemes, creativity vs control, and why coaching younger players often develops better coaches. Key Talking Points: * Why PE teachers and early mentors matter so much * Access to sport and the impact of shrinking school programs * Sport, stimulation, and social development * Over-systemisation and the loss of creativity * Why coaching younger players builds better coaches * Relationship-driven coaching across all sports * Team bonding, trust, and shared experiences * Why fun still matters in amateur sport   “It didn’t necessarily make you great, but it exposed you to it.” - Jimmy's & Jo's Coaches Corner ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Jimmy's & Jo's Podcast - The Matt Davies Episode

Music by bassmanguk (top man!) Show Notes - The Matt 'Spoony' Davies Episode Episode Summary: In this episode of Jimmy & Joe’s Podcast, Mark and Nick sit down with Matthew “Spoony” Davies — football coach, leader, community builder, and executive coach. From growing up in rural Scotland to discovering American football after university, Spoony shares a journey shaped less by wins and losses and more by relationships, values, and shared experience. He reflects on his time as a player, coach, chairman, Great Britain Assistant Head Coach, and now Head Coach of the East Kilbride Pirates — alongside building a successful executive coaching business. This is a wide-ranging conversation about burnout, leadership, authenticity, and why being about it matters far more than talking about it.   Key Talking Points: * Finding football later in life and falling in love with the community * Coaching juniors, seniors, and at GB level * Burnout, balance, and knowing when to step back * Building teams vs chasing wins * Leadership lessons that transfer from sport to business * Why relationships outlast results Honest, thoughtful, and full of perspective — this one’s for coaches, leaders, and anyone who’s stayed in the game for the people. “Don’t talk about it — be about it.” Matthew ‘Spoony’ Davies on leadership, burnout, and building teams that actually last. ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Jimmy's & Jo's Podcast - The Ed Morgan Episode

Music by bassmanguk (top man!) Show Notes - The Ed Morgan Episode Episode Summary: In this episode of the Jimmy & Joe’s Podcast, Nick and Mark are joined by Ed Morgan — former London Blitz player, chairman, and unofficial historian of his time with the programme. Ed reflects on growing up in the North-East, finding American football at university, and the path that took him from rookie player to helping lead the Blitz into European competition. Along the way, he shares lessons on leadership, volunteering, club culture, and why enjoyment matters just as much as intensity. This is a conversation packed with stories from training camps, European meetings, coaching rooms, and the moments that define teams long after the season ends.   Key Talking Points: * Discovering American football at university * Coaches, role models, and finding your voice * Leadership, negotiation, and running a club on a shoestring * European competition and Blitz history * Training camps, culture, and shared suffering * Why people perform best when they’re enjoying it This episode is a masterclass in organic leadership — how influence grows from showing up, caring deeply, and being willing to do the unglamorous work. Ed’s stories highlight how sport teaches negotiation, communication, resilience, and community in ways that last far beyond the final whistle. It’s also a reminder that the moments people remember most aren’t always the championships — they’re the camps, the bus rides, the arguments, the laughs, and the shared grind. “If people aren’t enjoying it, you’ll never get the best out of them.” ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Jimmy's & Jo's Podcast - The Stories Episode

Music by bassmanguk (top man!) Show Notes - The Jason Brisbane Episode   Episode Summary: To close out the first season of Jimmy’s & Jo’s we asked each guest to share a story or two from their time in football. Sometimes funny, sometimes crass, sometimes heartfelt, each story gives our guests the opportunity to unwittingly give a glimpse into the people and situations that touched them the most.   Story Board: ·     Jason Brisbane: Moped and ‘anti-drip’. ·     Neil Bowles: Dehydration, injuries, and farmer strong violence. ·     Rod Bradley: Carlstad and the Massive Kid. ·     Nick Manning: The Champagne Massive and “Have A Fun”. ·     Gareth Dauley: Amsterdam carnage and Scottish bonfires. ·     Mark Moss: More Amsterdam and Copenhagen learnings. ·     Nick Rockell: The London Blitz pivot point. Final Thoughts: One reason the Amsterdam trip is so memorable and was so messy is that not only was it the team’s first European competitive game but it also fell on the anniversary of the death of much loved teammate Dan “Raiders” Dawson. The very epitome of work hard-play hard, coaches Rockell and Moss made sure that while they coached players hard they also made sure there was fun to be had that would galvanize the core of a team to be more than the sum of it’s parts.   “Some of the craziest stories that ever happened to me, and after being in some wonderful stories in my lifetime, but the top 10 are always the Blitz” - Gareth Dauley ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Liker at det er både Podcaster (godt utvalg) og lydbøker i samme app, pluss at man kan holde Podcaster og lydbøker atskilt i biblioteket.
