Les mer The Night Visitors Vampire Research Society

They come uninvited. This is The Night Visitors, a paranormal podcast with James Cheney. The Night Visitors explores encounters with vampires, supernatural folklore, and purportedly true stories of the creatures that visit in the night. Each episode presents a single account drawn from firsthand testimony, family histories, and witness reports collected from around the world.James’s lifelong fascination with vampires and the supernatural led him through decades of research into vampire lore, psychic vampirism, and folkloric traditions spanning continents: the strigoii of Romania, the jiang shi of China, the soucouyant of Trinidad, the duppy spirits of Jamaica, the list goes on. That same fascination turned passion eventually pulled him from New England - a region with its own dark folklore - to Transylvania, where the locals still know what to do when the dead don't stay buried.Especially drawn to vampires and all things vampiric, James looks to fill in the gap that formed following the death of Dr Stephen Kaplan, who during the 1970s and 80s ran the Vampire Research Center, conducting serious inquiry into vampirism. His work has since fallen into obscurity. Despite today's explosion of interest in the paranormal, nobody is doing what he did - until now. The Night Visitors Vampire Research Society is a space where people can share their experiences and be taken seriously.Episodes draw on global vampire folklore and true supernatural accounts -Why did a rice farmer in the 1890s Guangdong survive a night trapped in a temple with a jiang shi? What protected a young woman in 1923 Honolulu from a curse sent across the Pacific? How does a guest in a Depression-era Québec boarding house never age and never eat? What do you do when a dishevelled stranger visits your night shift - and sleeps on a stone slab in the cemetery next door?Firsthand accounts from around the world that examine vampires, ghosts, curses, spiritual attacks, and entities that exist at the edges of belief. Our SoundThe Night Visitors theme music is "Haunted Haus" by composer Tim Kulig. episode Springtime in 1968 Brooklyn, a TRUE Shavuot Vampire Encounter cover

Springtime in 1968 Brooklyn, a TRUE Shavuot Vampire Encounter

Some years ago, I met Trudy, a well-traveled woman in her late sixties, who finally broke her silence about her friend Rifka’s terrifying vampire encounter in NYC in the late 60s. After hearing it, I wondered could a tormented soul really reach across generations? Rarely does a vampire story carry the weight of generational trauma quite like this one. Was Rifka’s experience a dream, or did something dark materialize from the shadows? Why did Rifka wake with mysterious marks on her neck feeling drained of her health, night after night? Seeking her mother’s guidance, Rifka shares her experience. Confronted with the truth, Noemi must reveal a long-held truth. What she reveals is a devastating secret that followed the family across decades and continents, buried since before World War II. Up against something ancient and relentless, a Williamsburg rabbi offers guidance rooted in tradition, and the Shavuot ritual becomes Rifka’s unexpected shield. (It’s honestly one of the more moving endings you’ll hear.) The encounter shapes Rifka forever, turning her toward both scholarship and spiritual practice. Tune in to hear this haunting story told in full. episode Chanda and the Floating Head cover

Chanda and the Floating Head

In early 1990s Cambodia, Chanda and her husband were being drained — literally. Night after night, they woke exhausted, covered in small puncture wounds, haunted by suffocating dreams. The source turned out to be closer than they imagined: their next-door neighbor, an ahp — a vampiric entity from Khmer folklore that hunts as a disembodied floating head with trailing entrails behind it. When a Buddhist monk's blessing finally let Chanda see what had been feeding on them in the dark, she knew exactly what she was dealing with. But defeating it would take something bigger — the sacred festival of Pchum Ben, when the gates of the underworld open and the ancestors come to help. What happens when you fight a vampire with faith, family, and a ring of thorn branches? Listen to find out. The Dead Don't Lie, Daria's Story

The Night Visitor of Belarus This week's episode of The Night Visitors Vampire Research Society supernatural podcast and YouTube story, explores a haunting narrative that blurs the line between medical rationality and spiritual mystery. In the mid-1980s, a young doctor named Yuri was working the night shift at a rural clinic deep in the Belarusian countryside. His only patient was an elderly woman named Katya who was nearing the end of her life. She told him about a childhood friend named Daria, a woman who'd died young under mysterious circumstances before the First World War and was buried without proper rites in the nearby cemetery. That evening, Katya said Daria had visited her and promised to return before dawn. Yuri didn't believe a word of it. Until…listen to find out. episode Janos and the Ingenue: A Vampire’s Warning in the City of Angels cover

Janos and the Ingenue: A Vampire’s Warning in the City of Angels

In 1997, I logged onto the internet for the first time and discovered a world of forums and newsgroups where the supernatural wasn't just a hobby, it was a shared passion. It was in one of these digital spaces dedicated to vampire subculture that I met a writer from New York City. He shared with me a remarkable account he had gathered while interviewing a 98-year-old former actress named Dora, who had traded a life of Rhode Island luxury for the grit and glamour of 1920s Hollywood. This week, I’m recounting the story as it was told to me where in an abandoned desert mansion, Dora met a mysterious Hungarian man named Janos. He moved through the set like a ghost, his skin the color of alabaster and his touch as cold as ice. Through the lens of Dora’s memory, I explore her brief, intense connection with this "Mr. Szabo" and the chilling warning he gave her about the "soul-sucking monster" of the film industry. Was he a man out of time, or a literal creature of the night? I look into the fragments of truth left behind—the bit parts Dora actually played, and the haunting letter from the Hungarian National Theatre.
