To begin, this podcast will focus on getting a brief introduction to some of the academics, professionals, and leading voices in the enormous field of workplace psychology. In later episodes, the goal will be to dive deeper! If you are curious about a career in IO psychology, HR, or anything "people" in either academics or the business world, this podcast will offer some solid exposure to the many facets. Hosted by Lukas Robertson, a graduate student pursuing both an MBA and an MA in industrial organizational psychology & human resource management (IOHRM) at Appalachian State University.

Episode 6 | Dr. Tim Huelsman

Dr. Tim Huelsman is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management Master’s program at Appalachian State University. Since arriving at Appalachian in 1997, he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in his major area of specialization, organizational psychology, as well as in his other interest areas: program evaluation, research methods, statistics, and personality.  Tim’s research interests are broad and include organizational assessment, organizational culture and climate, job attitudes, work stress, and individual differences and diversity in the workplace. He has consulted for organizations large and small in the for-profit, not-for-profit, and government sectors. His most recent work has been facilitating strategic planning in higher education, but he has also engaged in organizational assessment, organizational development, and program evaluation.  Tim is a past Chairperson of the North Carolina I-O Psychologists and as a member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, he co-authored the current Guidelines for Education and Training in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and participated in the creation of the annual Master’s Student Consortium. Tim served as Assistant Chairperson of Psychology for 4 years. In 2014 he was presented with the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and was inducted into Appalachian State University’s Academy of Outstanding Graduate Mentors in 2013. He earned his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Psychology from Saint Louis University.  Tim resides in Boone, NC, where he pursues his avocation, photography.  He and his wife Jeanie (d. 12/23) have a son Calvin, a recent graduate of the Wilson College of Textiles at NC State University. Dr. H. Kristl Davison is an Associate Professor and Assistant Chair of the Management Department at Appalachian State University. She received her M.S. and PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Tulane University. She has taught in Management and Psychology departments for over 20 years; prior to her academic career she worked as an Employee Selection Specialist at GTE/Verizon and as a Compensation Consultant. Her research is in the areas of gender and disability discrimination, legal issues in human resources, personnel selection, counterproductive workplace behaviors, and personality testing. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior & Human Decision Processes, Journal of Business Ethics, Personnel Psychology, Organizational Research Methods, and Journal of Vocational Behavior. Dr. Davison serves as an Associate Editor for Human Performance, and is on the Editorial Board for Organizational Research Methods. Dr. Jack Carson was born and raised in Yuma, Arizona. He is an assistant professor of management at the Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University, where he teaches organizational behavior at the undergraduate level and Leadership, Groups, and Teams at the master's level. He enjoys helping students think through the "hows" and "whys" of organizational work life. Jack's research interests include workplace interpersonal mistreatment, attribution theory, deviance, and social exchange. He has published numerous articles in reputable journals, such as Group & Organization Management, Sustainability, and Journal of Management. His notable works explore topics like destructive voice responses to perceived unfairness, the effectiveness of organizational sustainability messaging, and the predictors of workplace deviance. Jack holds a BS in accountancy and an MBA from Northern Arizona University, and a PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Auburn University. Though he is not originally from North Carolina, he got here as fast as he could. In addition to his academic endeavors, Jack enjoys hiking, biking, and cooking with his partner, Kendra, who manages the micro- and molecular biology labs at Appalachian State University.
