We are reminded that it is only by a personal relationship with Christ that we are saved. Our works are as ‘filthy rags’ compared to Jesus’ free gift of grace! We are able to see that, despite everything and the difficulties Naomi and Ruth went through, God was still watching over them. We are reminded that God is at work even when we don’t see it! Jon’s challenge to each of us: 1) Take time to look around and see the good God has done and thank the Lord for it1 2) Share something good God has done with someone else. Let that encourage you and them! As we step into this new year we hope that you will be encouraged to place your trust in a God who has plans for you! In todays sermon Pastor Jon takes us through the parable of the Sower. He starts off with the reminder that Jesus mentions listening two times in this brief passage. He then talks about how Jesus’ parable shows how the hearts of his listeners are like the ground - some will hear and actually listen while others will discard what they hear. He reminds us that following Jesus means transformation - we can’t follow in our own way and follow Jesus’ way. We must become a new creation to go His way. Finally, Pastor Jon reminds us of our call to sow the seed! It doesn’t matter what the ground is like, we are only called to sow, not to manage the response. At the beginning of this sermon Pastor Jon asks for 12 volunteers and then gives them a heavy charge. To drop everything—work, school, family—and follow him. His call mirrors that of Jesus and we are posted the question: If we were in the disciples situation, would we follow? Pastor Jon then points out that often the church tries to walk the line between following Jesus and being like thew world. We have to find where that line is. Jesus calls us to something different and He’s not calling us to do it on our own. Then, in verses 31-35 of our passage for this message Jon points out how Jesus turned things around: He said that The Kingdom of God was not about being a Jew but about following Him and living in God’s will. Jesus says: “I’m not about the crows, I’m about the committed.” We are then posed a few questions at the end: What if we were to adopt the model of the disciples? To truly care for one another like the early church did. Are we willing to invest in others? Who is Jesus calling me to?
