Welcome to Poppers & Popcorn, a podcast that combines all things queer with all things film. Noticing a lot of gay things in modern cinema? We're here to queen out about it, and be a little messy while doing so. Taking the perspectives of a critic and a filmmaker, hosts Matt Dougherty and Josh Currence dissect new releases every week through a queer lens. The film community desperately needs more queer voices, and we're hear to help fill that void with as much pride (and shame) as we can muster.
34 Episoder
Episode 33 - Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood Review
Quentin Tarantino's ninth film is upon, and Matt and Josh dive deep into Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie (and honestly, all of them are stunning in it for very different reasons). Other topics include the trailer for Queen & Slim, the fact that Joker is included in the lineup for the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, and Todd Haynes' Carol.
Episode 32 - The Lion King Review
There's no real sense of "Hakuna Matata" in Matt and Josh's review of The Lion King remake (though, thankfully, the same can't be said for Beyonce). Jon Favreau directs and Donald Glover, the Queen, James Earl Jones, Chiwetal Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, and Seth Rogen star. Other topics include gay characters in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie and the abomination that is the Cats trailer.
Episode 31 - Spider-Man: Far From Home Review
Doing whatever a queer film podcast can do (as Disney Marvel essentially takes over the universe/box office), Matt and Josh review Spider-Man: Far From Home, which brings back Tom Holland as Peter Parker to face off against Jake Gyllenhaal's Msyterio. Other topics include the MCU at large, The Little Mermaid's casting controversy, Rian Johnson's Knives Out trailer, and Josh's upcoming documentary.
Episode 30 - Tangerine Retro Review with Special Guest Jose Alvarez
Matt and Josh are joined by Killer Unicorn screenwriter Jose Alvarez for our 30th episode, in which we look back at Sean Baker's 2015 classic Tangerine, starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and James Ransone. We also recap World Pride in NYC and talk about the future of independent cinema, Little Mermaid casting, and a buried surprise from Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. Jose's queer centric slasher film Killer Unicorn is now available for purchase or rent on iTunes and Amazon.
Episode 29 - Toy Story 4 Review
This week, Matt and Josh tackle Pixar's Toy Story 4 and are surprised to find they fell in love with a suicidal spork. Tony Hale joins Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack for the unexpected sequel after Toy Story 3 effectively ended the series. Other topics include World Pride events, Taika Waititi's new Flash Gordon film, and the trouble brewing for the industry at the box office. And lastly, happy Pride to all who celebrate!
