My hour was an ‘I’ve just spent a load on Bandcamp and Traxsource, let’s see what happens’ special - only tracks that I’ve just downloaded and don’t really know yet… these ones are always fun and a bit unpredictable. Started at a hip hop tempo and things quickly picked up, it was a fun hour and I cammed in 26 of the little beauties. Then in hour 2 I was very pleased to hand over to a rising star in the disco scene, Charlie Price. Charlie’s already making big impact at a young age, and this mix shows you why. I started this episode slow and slinky, but switched things up halfway to road test a few promos. Tried to keep it a vaguely summery vibe this time, and covered lots of bases as usual. This fortnight’s guest mix was from Leon Dahl, who’s an ace producer based in NZ that I’ve appeared alongside on some compilations. It also turns out he’s a wicked DJ, as shown by this mix - an hour and a bit of eclectic but very funky sounds. There’s a lot in here but it flows so nicely - there’s funky stuff, old school stuff, ghetto stuff, banging stuff… all the good stuff! And then a genius slowdown at the end - didn’t see that coming. After last episode’s 6th birthday special, I was back with more funkier fun for episode 160! I had a slightly shorter bit of the show due to a longer guest mix, but I still crammed in all sorts - disco, nu-disco, boogie, hip hop, funk and of course a bit of weirdness. The guest mix this time was a real treat - 70 minutes of beats, breaks, funk & soul and hip hop from DJ Russkins. Russell is a fan of the show, and when he sent me this mix I knew it would fit the bill perfectly - it’s a fast moving and fun trip through genres and eras, with loads of fun mashups and recognisable hooks. Funkier Sounds celebrated its 6th birthday with an hour of tunes from me and then an hour of tunes from a DJ and producer that I’ve been into forever. My hour was the usual mix - starting things mid-tempo and funky, bringing things down a notch and then cranking things a touch with a few promo goodies before the handover. In hour 2 I was dead chuffed to welcome none other than Fingerman. Gregg’s a bit of a legend in the game, and someone who I looked up to loads before I got into producing. Love that I’ve put out a couple of bits on his annual Hot Digits compilations (eyes on this year!), love that we hung out at Glasto a few years back, and love that he’s done a brilliant mix for my show! It’s the expected level of lushness, launching straight in after the trademark spoken intro. Gets quite full on towards the end too, but always keeping it cool, well-mixed and very Fingerman.
