He Had the Perfect Tech Career - Then Walked Away

My friend Srinath might be the most interesting person I know. Aerospace engineer. Pilot. Flight instructor. Former software engineer. And now, med student on his way to becoming a doctor. We sat down for the very first episode of my podcast and I just let him talk. What came out was one of the most fascinating career journeys I've ever heard: from growing up as a first-gen Indian-American kid in Seattle, getting inspired by a Boeing factory tour at age 6, to soloing a plane at 16 and getting his pilot license at 18, all while planning a path to medicine on the side. We got into a lot: what it's actually like to walk away from a software engineering career, the brutal honesty of med school, the pressure Indian families put on their kids (and what happens when your kid wants to be both an engineer and a doctor), and the real conversation about money. How much money is enough, and when does chasing a higher number stop moving the needle on your actual life? If you've ever felt like you're "supposed" to be on one life track but couldn't stop thinking about another one, then this episode is for you. Chapters (0:00) - Indian parents' expectations (1:02) - Growing up in Seattle & the Boeing Factory (3:26) - Learning to fly a real plane in high school (5:22) - How a broken arm made him want to be a doctor (6:38) - Can you really become a doctor after engineering? (9:27) - Landing the software engineering job during COVID (18:22) - Was college worth it to become a software engineer? (20:31) - Day-to-day as a software engineer (28:59) - Being awarded a patent due to his engineering inventions (38:10) - Do you miss being a software engineer? (41:12) - Doctor vs. engineer, which is more stressful? (45:42) - Do doctors use ChatGPT to provide care to patients? (51:37) - Will AI replace doctors? (57:37) - How did being a software engineer influence your medical career? (1:01:04) - Day-to-day as a medical student (1:04:58) - Why Family Practice is the best specialty for doctors (1:09:29) - How many hours a week do doctors work? (1:10:47) - Are patients getting scammed by hospitals and health insurance? (1:19:48) - Is the U.S. healthcare system actually broken? (1:23:29) - Which country has the best healthcare system? (1:24:19) - Did Luigi Mangione have any impact on the healthcare industry (1:26:58) - Who determines a medical resident’s salary? (1:28:34) - How has money influenced your career decisions and life path? (1:29:40) - What advice would you give your 15-year-old self? (1:32:33) - What is the worst advice you commonly hear in tech and medicine? (1:35:31) - If money didn’t matter, what would you do with your life? (1:37:51) - Where do you see yourself in 5 years? (1:38:36) - What’s your lifelong goal? (1:39:14) - Can anybody become a pilot?
