Climbing Higher: A Career on the Line

In this episode, we take you inside one of the most essential—and demanding—careers in our community: the electrical lineworker. From restoring power after storms to keeping everyday life running smoothly, lineworkers are truly the backbone of reliable service. We sit down with one of Flint Energies’ own lineworkers to get a firsthand look at the profession. This isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. You’ll hear what daily life really looks like: * Working outdoors in all conditions—from summer heat to severe storms * Climbing poles and operating equipment at significant heights * Responding at all hours to restore power when communities need it most According to our lineman, the people who thrive in this career tend to be: * Physically strong and mentally tough * Comfortable with heights and hands-on work * Team-oriented and dependable * Calm under pressure, especially in emergency situations * Driven by purpose, knowing their work directly impacts families and communities We also talk with a Flint Energies Human Resources representative about what makes a strong candidate. Beyond technical ability, they emphasize: * A strong work ethic and reliability * Safety-first mindset—this is non-negotiable in the field * Willingness to learn and grow through apprenticeship programs * Communication skills and teamwork, since crews rely on each other daily Candidates don’t have to know everything on day one—but they do need the right attitude, discipline, and commitment to the work. For those interested in pursuing this path, we explore the Electrical Lineworker certification program at South Georgia Technical College. Here’s what students can expect: * An intensive 8-week program designed to prepare entry-level lineworkers (South Georgia Technical College [https://demo.www.southgatech.edu/college-catalog/current/programs/electrical-lineworker]) * A curriculum covering: * Electrical safety and fundamentals * Lineworker tools and equipment * Climbing techniques and working at heights * Real-world simulations and field training * Hands-on learning makes up the majority of the program, building real skills quickly * Opportunity to earn a Class A CDL, required to operate utility trucks * Students even gain on-the-job insight through observation with utility crews Graduates leave with the foundational skills needed to step directly into the workforce with electric cooperatives and utility companies. Linework is more than a career—it’s a commitment to service. Whether it’s restoring power after a storm or ensuring families stay connected every day, lineworkers play a vital role in powering our communities. If you’re looking for a career that is: * Hands-on * Purpose-driven * Challenging but rewarding …then life on the line might be exactly where you belong.

Keeping the Lights On- Stories from the Line Crew

In this episode, we go behind the scenes of what it really takes to keep the power flowing every day. At an Electric Membership Cooperative (EMC), it’s not just about flipping a switch—it’s a coordinated effort between system operators and lineworkers working around the clock to serve their communities. Before a lineworker is ever dispatched, the process begins in system operations—the nerve center of the cooperative. System operators are responsible for: * Monitoring the electric grid 24/7 * Identifying outages and pinpointing problem areas * Dispatching crews quickly and efficiently * Rerouting power when possible to minimize outages Using advanced technology and real-time data, they make critical decisions in seconds—especially during storms or peak demand. Once a call comes in, lineworkers are the boots on the ground—often working in challenging and unpredictable conditions. From routine maintenance to emergency restoration, line crews: * Patrol lines to locate damage * Repair or replace poles, transformers, and lines * Work safely at heights and around high voltage * Respond at all hours—day or night, rain or shine Their work is physically demanding, highly technical, and essential to restoring normalcy for homes, schools, and businesses. Keeping the lights on isn’t a solo job—it’s a constant collaboration between system operators and field crews. Here’s how the teamwork comes together: * Operators analyze and direct, while crews execute in the field * Continuous communication ensures safety and efficiency * Every decision is made with one priority in mind: restoring power as quickly and safely as possible During major outages, this partnership becomes even more critical. * System operations track widespread outages in real time * Crews are deployed strategically to restore the largest number of members first * Additional crews may be called in through mutual aid agreements It’s a coordinated response that can span long hours and multiple days—all to bring communities back online. Reliable electricity powers everyday life—but it’s easy to forget the people behind it. This episode highlights: * The dedication and resilience of lineworkers * The precision and focus of system operators * The teamwork that keeps everything running Keeping the lights on takes more than equipment—it takes people. From the control room to the top of the pole, every role matters in delivering safe, reliable power to the communities we serve.

Where Power Meets Purpose- Linemen for Little Ones

In this episode, we share the heart behind one of Flint Energies’ most meaningful traditions—Linemen for Little Ones. For more than 20 years, this program has been a shining example of what it means to serve beyond the line. Lineman for Little Ones was created over two decades ago by Pamela Knight and Al Williams at Flint Energies with one simple but powerful purpose: to make sure children living on Flint Energies’ lines experience the joy of Christmas morning. For families facing financial hardship, the holiday season can be difficult. This program steps in to ensure that “little ones” who might otherwise go without can wake up to a traditional Christmas—filled with gifts, joy, and hope. What makes Linemen for Little Ones so special is the people behind it. Lineworkers, employees, and community members come together each year to give back in a deeply personal way. It’s not just about presents—it’s about: * Restoring joy during the holidays * Supporting families in your own community * Living out the cooperative spirit of service This program is powered by generous support and community-driven fundraisers throughout the year: * Date: Saturday, April 18, 2026 * Location: Georgia Veterans State Park at Lake Blackshear * Details: * Traditional fishing tournament + bank fishing option * Children under 10 fish free * Registration: 6:30 a.m. * Start time: 7:00 a.m. (or sunrise) This event brings together anglers of all ages for a great cause—combining friendly competition with meaningful impact. * Date: Monday, September 21 * Location: The Landings Golf Club * Format: 4-man scramble * Details: * Registration: 8:00 a.m. * Tee-off: 9:00 a.m. * Lunch and awards to follow A day on the course that helps create Christmas for families across the Flint Energies service area. Community support is what keeps this program going strong year after year. * Sponsorships are available for both events * To learn more or get involved, contact: Allison Owens at aowens@flintemc.com [aowens@flintemc.com] Linemen for Little Ones is a reminder that the work of an electric cooperative goes far beyond keeping the lights on—it’s about lifting up the communities we serve. Where power meets purpose, lives are changed. And through Linemen for Little Ones, Flint Energies continues to deliver something even more powerful than electricity—hope.
