Sobre "So Others May Thrive Podcast" By Mind Medic Jim "doc"Martel

From the deepest loss and hardest challenges, Toward the life you were meant to live. There comes a point when survival is no longer enough. Despair, heartbreak, and the turmoils of life demand something more. You fight back, re-grasp your heart, soul and sense of self. You work from what you were… The hard, necessary work of becoming. That is the ground the Mind Medic stands on. Not motivation, not theory, this is practical, tactical, real-life work for people ready to stop merely enduring and start living fully, in marriage, work, identity, and everyday lives. The mission is simple "So Others May Thrive."Jim did not arrive at this work by accident. He joined the Army and became a medic. He spent eight years in the Army Reserve and National Guard. The medic creed “so others may live”was not just slogan. After service he worked as a direct support professional with men living with intellectual disabilities. That role taught patience, presence, dignity, and the quiet power of consistent care. It sharpened him. Made him more precise and More human. The decisive catalyst came when he watched his father seek help for PTSD in his mid-fifties. Seeing a man of that strength open himself to vulnerability planted a seed. Jim carried that seed into graduate school for counseling. He served on Crisis Response Teams, supported individuals in mental health programs, and worked with law enforcement and first responders with a Trauma Intervention Team.He earned his degree and built Sebago Lake Counseling & Consultation into a thriving clinical practice, walking with individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult seasons. When the Ground Gave WayThen tragedy struck.Jim’s father a Vietnam veteran, former firefighter, and a man who spent his life helping others — was overcome by PTSD and became one of the 22. HE had lost his grandfather the same way. The loss shattered Jim. It struck at identity, purpose, and the foundation of the work he had built. Moral injury. Despair. The real question of whether he could or would continue as a counselor. He did not quit. From that rebuilding the hurt, the struggle, the refusal to give up — Jim co-founded Operation Ray of Light. The nonprofit for veterans that exists so other families would not walk the same road alone, and so his father’s legacy would become light rather than only loss. Learn more at operationrayoflight.com. Clinical practice details at sebagolakecounseling.com.This is the origin of the Mind Medic.Standing with people in their darkest hours and refusing to leave them there. Military training, human services years, crisis work, clinical practice, personal collapse and reconstruction all forged into one clear purpose. What the Mind Medic Podcast DeliversThe Mind Medic Podcast puts those hard-won tools into your hands. It is for the person rebuilding after loss or moral injury. For the husband or wife who wants to become a better partner. For the professional who needs to lead under pressure without losing himself. For anyone who feels the gap between who they are and who they know they could be.You will not find endless analysis or empty encouragement. You will find practical, tactical skills for the everyday work of becoming — skills that help you work through adversity, resilience, strengthen relationships, and reclaim joy and purpose when life has tried to strip them away. The focus is not a distant end game. It is the daily, deliberate work of reshaping your life from a place of hope, even when hope feels scarce.

"The Heart Of The Mind Medic"

SO OTHERS MAY THRIVE PODCAST - THE HEART OF THE MIND MEDIC THIS EPISODE IS A PERSONAL ORIGIN STORY FROM JIM DOC MARTEL, WHO EXPLAINS HOW MILITARY SERVICE, COUNSELING WORK, LOSS, AND LIVED EXPERIENCE SHAPED THE MISSION BEHIND THIS SHOW. IT REFRAMES RESILIENCE AS PRACTICAL WORK AND CENTERS THE IDEA THAT HEALING IS NOT ABOUT SIMPLY SURVIVING. KEY TOPICS * Jim Doc Martell introduces himself as an LCPC, lead clinician at Sebago Lake Counseling and Consultation, co-founder of Operation Ray of Light, and a veteran family advocate. * He explains the core mission of the Mind Medic: lead from the front, heal hearts, and help people move from survival to thriving. * He traces his values back through a legacy of service, including his grandfather’s World War II service, his father’s Vietnam-era experience, and his own path into Army medic training. * Jim describes how resilience was built through training, persistence, and learning to keep going especially when it sucks. * He shares how working with people with developmental disabilities taught him patience, empathy, dignity, and the importance of walking beside others. * He tells the story of his father’s PTSD diagnosis in 2001 and how his father reaching out for help became a formative lesson that strength. * Jim opens up about founding Sebago Lake Counseling & Consultation and working diverse clients including veterans, first responders, spouses, parents, and children. * He discusses the impact of his father’s death in 2015 and the moral injury and burnout that followed in his own life. * He explains how reaching out for help again led him toward healing, meaning-making, and a renewed purpose rather than escape from pain. * He introduces Operation Ray of Light as a nonprofit built with his family to support veterans and families through communityand belonging. * He frames the podcast as tactical and practical, aimed at invisible wounds, marriage strain, parenting challenges, aging, depression, isolation, and the daily work of choosing to thrive.
