13: The Power of Support and Embracing Agency with Hillary Di Menna

This episode talks about sexual violence. If you're a survivor in need of support, know that help is available. * Canada [https://endingviolencecanada.org/sexual-assault-centres-crisis-lines-and-support-services/] * USA [https://www.nsvrc.org/find-help] * UK [https://thesurvivorstrust.org/support-in-your-area/] * Australia [https://www.nasasv.org.au/support-directory] On this episode of The Body Talks, Vera gets into a heartfelt conversation with Hillary, a gender justice advocate. This chat delves into the importance of community support and survivor-centred care, language and empowerment, healing through movement, and finding joy and connectivity in one's body. Whether you're a survivor or an ally, this episode offers valuable insights and resources for understanding and supporting those affected by sexual violence. A Toronto creek witch, mother, writer, and gender justice advocate, Hillary specializes in sexual violence prevention education. Since getting her start in grassroots feminist organizing, Hillary has worked in various capacities for sexual assault centres across Ontario, as well as for the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres. She currently works as a post-secondary Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Coordinator and is a social media volunteer at the Sexual Assault Centre of Brant.  A long time writer, Hillary's most recent work 'Three Little Witches' has been published in the Demeter Press collection 'Gone Feral: Unruly Women and the Undoing of Normative Femininity.' Hillary takes up space and paints it pink with her daughter, a trinity of black cats, and a little black dog. She shares her home with a drummer, writes love letters to the moon, dots ‘i’s with hearts, and makes cat scratches in her notebooks. Hillary has messy hair and can be bossy sometimes (and she prides herself on both). 12: Embracing Fat Liberation & Social Bonds with Sophia Apostol

In today's episode, Vera talks with Sophia Apostol, host and creator of Fat Joy Life and the Fat Joy Silent Book Club. They discuss the journey of embracing body equanimity, unlearning systemic conditioning, and fostering a healthier relationship with our bodies. Sophia Apostol (she/her) is a fat, white, cis woman. She believes in the inherent worthiness of fat people and the birthright of fat joy. Since 2014, she’s been helping people explore body equanimity, unlearn systemic conditioning, and build the lives they’ve dreamed of. A Professional Certified Coach, Sophia offers fat liberation coaching, leadership coaching, and creative writing coaching. The "Fat Joy Podcast with Sophia Apostol" is Sophia's way of using her rage against social injustice and systemic oppression of fat folks and alchemizing that into an invitation to center and connect to the stories of people living in marginalized bodies. This podcast is a love letter to anyone who has ever been told they are too much and not enough, all at the same time. Her current project is a monthly gathering of fat folks seeking leisure, craft, or reading time to lower stress levels, improve mental health, and bring play into our lives intentionally.
