Does God Like Black Women

Eight months ago, I published my inaugural Substack essay, Does God Like Black Women? At the time, I thought I was writing a question. Looking back, I realize I was also writing an origin story. In the months since, my work has evolved. The questions have deepened. The language has sharpened. But this essay remains one of the most-read pieces I have ever published. Today, I wanted to return to it—not with new commentary, but with my voice. This is not a podcast episode. It is an audio essay. A witness. A lament. A question I am still willing to ask. Thank you for listening. —Kendra The body has always been preaching. This is a public episode. When the Body Refuses

Sometimes the body says no long before the mind is ready to understand why. This final reflection in the Body Sermons series explores embodied refusal — the moment the body can no longer absorb the cost of self-abandonment, performance, fragmentation, or survival disguised as faithfulness. Especially for Black women, the body is often taught to endure what should have never required endurance in the first place. But eventually… the body stops negotiating. This is a reflection on survival, systems, grief, embodiment, and the sacredness of finally listening to ourselves honestly. ⸻ “Sometimes refusal is wisdom.” “The body stops negotiating.” “How long your body pleaded for honesty while your mind searched for more sophisticated ways to endure.” ⸻ A Question from the Inner Well: What has your body been trying to refuse that your mind keeps trying to rationalize? Body Sermons is an audio reflection series exploring embodiment, faith, nervous systems, power, and the inner lives of Black women. This is a public episode. Reading the Body Without Shame

There is a difference between noticing the body and condemning it. Reading the Body Without Shame is a reflection on interpretation, self-return, and the quiet practice of listening to ourselves without immediately turning what we discover into a problem to solve. Many of us learned how to override the body long before we learned how to understand it. We learned to push through exhaustion. To dismiss discomfort. To mistrust emotion. To treat the body as an obstacle rather than a source of wisdom. But what if the body is not asking to be corrected? What if it is asking to be heard? This episode explores embodiment, curiosity, survival, and the sacred work of returning to ourselves with honesty instead of judgment. “Awareness is not the same thing as judgment.” “The body is not asking to be controlled all the time. Sometimes it is asking to be witnessed.” “Noticing is not the same thing as condemnation” A Question from the Inner Well: What changes when you approach your body with curiosity instead of criticism? Body Sermons is an audio reflection series exploring embodiment, faith, nervous systems, power, and the inner lives of Black women. This is a public episode.
