Exploring the Escalating Situation in the South China Sea

In this episode, the issue of the West Philippine Sea was discussed in relation to the China-US relationship. According to China’s perspective, the actions of the Philippines are seen as a challenge to China’s position in this matter, particularly in their competition with the US. However, the Philippines aims to change this perception and emphasize that it is not about the China-US relationship, but rather about the Philippines-China relationship. The Philippines wants to address the issue based on the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas and refute the false notion that it is an enclosed sea. The objective is to demonstrate that the issue in the West Philippine Sea is directly related to the Philippines and China. Prof. Herman Kraft said it was mentioned that Filipino fishermen are facing difficulties entering Scarborough Shoal, and China is obstructing the resupply missions of the Philippines. This becomes problematic as the fishermen are unable to sustain their livelihood within Scarborough Shoal due to China’s interference. Additionally, the resupply missions sent by the Philippines to the soldiers stationed at Sierra Madre in Ayunin Shoal are also being manipulated by the Chinese Coast Guard. This is unjust and contrary to the decisions made. This tension highlights the Philippines’ assertion of its rights in the West Philippine Sea. The Need for Increased Investment in Cyber Security in the Philippines

Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy stated on Monday that millions of people were impacted by the data breach in the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) system. Sadly, millions of dollars are involved. When asked how many people were affected by the data breach, Uy told reporters that work on it was 90% complete. “But the number might decrease because there were duplicates,” he added. As a result of their inability to obtain the money they demanded, the hackers, according to him, may sell the information to scammers and phishers. To “gamitin” (use their data), he said, “they will try to monetize the information by selling to scammers, to phishers. Uy claims that investigators are still working to determine whether the hackers are foreigners or Filipinos. In this episode, the hosts discuss cyber security in the Philippines with guest Ronald Gustilo, the National Campaigner of Digital Pinoys. They focus on recent data breaches in the country, particularly the Philippine health insurance. The hosts compare the situation in the Philippines to Australia, where there are strict privacy laws and penalties for data breaches. Ronald provides insights into the state of cyber security in the Philippines and the challenges faced in protecting data. Tune in to learn more about the current landscape of cyber security in the Philippines.
