Tuppenceworth.ie 02: The Farm at Lezaven, Finistere by Roderic O’Connor and The Wave by Nathaniel Hone

This week (ok, fortnight) the podcast takes in two paintings by Irish Artists influenced by the French Impressionists and working in the 1890s. Conveniently, The Farm at Lezaven, Finistere by Roderic O’Connor and The Wave by Nathaniel Hone hang right beside each other. They’re both to be found in Room 19, Milltown Wing of the National Gallery of Ireland. The Monet painting I mention by way of comparison is Argentuil Basin with a Single Sailboat, painted 1874. It is also on show in the NGI. The Farm at Lezaven, Finistere by Roderic O’Connor and The Wave by Nathaniel Hone (mp3 1.7Mb) [http://tuppenceworth.podbean.com/medias/web/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhNS5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS82NzMyNi91L1R1cHBlbmNld29ydGhpZTAyX1RoZUZhcm1hdExlemF2ZW5GaW5pc3RlcmVieVJvZGVyaWNPQ29ubm9yYW5kVGhlV2F2ZWJ5TmF0aGFuaWVsSG9uZTEubXAz/Tuppenceworthie02_TheFarmatLezavenFinisterebyRodericOConnorandTheWavebyNathanielHone1.mp3] Special Note: I can’t speak French, at all. Thus my pronunciation of O’Connor’s painting’s title is comically bad and I had to come up with ways to refer to it other than by name throughout.

Tuppenceworth.ie 01: The Opening of the Sixth Seal by Francis Denby

After a bit of a rethink and a rejiggle, I’ve come back with a rather more polished edition of the National Gallery of Ireland Guide podcast. This week (yes, I’m still aiming for weekly) I talk about Francis Denby’s The Opening Of The Sixth Seal. It is a huge, gloomy picture of the apocalypse that used to entrance me as a child. As with all things, I’ve made life difficult by changing the subscription feed. If you would like to get this and all future editions of the National Gallery of Ireland in MP3 format then tune your iTunes or other devices to http://feeds.feedburner.com/NationalGalleryOfIrelandGuide If you’d like to listen to just this edition, here’s the direct link: Francis Denby’s The Opening Of The Sixth Seal (mp3, 1.9Mb) [http://tuppenceworth.podbean.com/medias/web/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhNS5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS82NzMyNi91L1R1cHBlbmNld29ydGhpZTAxX1RoZU9wZW5pbmdPZlRoZVNpeHRoU2VhbC1GcmFuY2lzRGVuYnkubXAz/Tuppenceworthie01_TheOpeningOfTheSixthSeal-FrancisDenby.mp3] I’ll also post, as an experiment, a slightly enhanced version in Apple’s iPod specific format. This has a small easter egg for the listener/viewer. For technical reasons, I’ll put that in a seperate post.

Podcast Prototype

An experiment for this nice sunny weekend. Tuppenceworth Podcast Prototype: El Greco at the National Gallery of Ireland [http://tuppenceworth.podbean.com/medias/web/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhNS5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS82NzMyNi91L1R1cHBlbmNld29ydGhpZTAwX0VsR3JlY29hdHRoZU5hdGlvbmFsR2FsbGVyeW9mSXJlbGFuZDEubXAz/Tuppenceworthie00_ElGrecoattheNationalGalleryofIreland1.mp3] The address for the Art Podcast feed, which will automatically deliver you any subsequent episodes in this series is http://feeds.feedburner.com/tuppenceworth/podcasts I’ve run up a prototype podcast. Taking out the hard part of coming up with something to say, I recycled my essay on El Greco’s St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata, which hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland. I did have an idea for a radio programme a few years back which would take either a single picture, or a theme running through a few pictures and discuss them briefly. In theory, you could then walk around the gallery with your own audio tour, agreeing or disagreeing with the choices and ideas of the talkers. I’ve a few other pictures researched, with the next aiming to be a piece on the colourful history of “The Opening of the Sixth Seal” which always facinated me as a child. But I’d also like other people to join in the fun. If you have a picture you can write about 4-5 minutes on, and would like to share your opinions or experiences with other visitors, why not get in touch at smcgarr AT tuppenceworth.ie. I’ll try and look after the nasty technical side, if you don’t want to. Though as you can hear from my first go out, I can’t promise perfection. And of course, like tuppenceworth itself, there’s no reason why we couldn’t have podcasts on any other topic. So let me know if you have a non-art related idea as well. Special thanks to Colm, who loaned me all the gear. UPDATE: My choice of jazzy theme music has been domestically scorned as ‘the kind of thing you’d hear on City Channel’. This, I suppose, is called listener feedback. If you’d like to ‘write the theme tune, sing the theme tune’, please let me know at the above email address.
